Athletic Club still progress to Europa League last 16 despite defeat

Spartak Moscow won 2-1 at San Mames on Thursday evening on a night that will be remembered for the violent incidents which took place outside the stadium.

Despite the defeat, Athletic Club still progress to the last 16 thanks to their 3-1 win in Moscow last week.

It was Luiz Adriano who kickstarted the Basque side's panic in this one, netting at the very end of a first half in which the Russian side were superior.

Athletic were slightly better after the break and Xabier Etxeita made it 1-1 on the night with a very powerful header in the 57th minute.

That goal was followed up with a good spell of play from the LaLiga side, but Lorenzo Melgarejo's 84th minute strike meant one more away goal would force extra time.

The home fans were made to suffer, but their team ultimately prevailed.
