A former Man United coach has revealed the reasons as to why the club stopped their pursuit of Harry Kane before his move to Bayern Munich.
Back in 2023, the Red Devils were keen on signing the Tottenham striker and had weighed up a potential move during the summer window.
However, a formal approach was never made and instead of getting Kane, Man United opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £72 million.
Kane then sealed a stunning £100million move from Spurs to Bayern Munich and has since scored 73 goals in 75 goals for the Bundesliga giants.
Hojlund, meanwhile, has netted just 23 times in 75 games for the Red Devils and has particularly struggled in recent weeks amid United's injury crisis.
Now, former United coach Benni McCarthy has revealed the reason as to why United opted to sign Hojlund instead of Kane.
McCarthy said: 'Harry Kane, for me, was the complete package. But unfortunately, the club didn't see it that way.
'They looked at it as Højlund, in the long run would be a more prized asset than investing in both Rasmus and Kane.
'So we stopped pursuing Kane, and we ended up getting just Rasmus.'
After starting the season injured, Hojlund found the back of the net in his second start of the campaign in the league.
The Dane netted the winner in the 2-1 win over Brentford in October after Ethan Pinnock had cancelled out Alejandro Garnacho's opener.
He was trusted to start games by Erik ten Hag, and then Amorim, but struggled in front of goal.
His strike in the 3-2 defeat by Nottingham Forest was a consolation, and he hasn't scored in the nine games since.
Meanwhile, England's all-time leading scorer, Kane, tops the Bundesliga scoring chart with 21 goals, and has netted the fourth-most in the 2024-25 Champions League campaign.
The German giants are well-positioned to win their 12th Bundesliga title in 13 seasons, after their 11-year streak as champions was halted by Bayer Leverkusen last term.
A trophy this season with Bayern would be Kane's first in his illustrious 15-year career.
Kane was recently left sprawling on the turf after a head clash with Piero Hincapie during Bayern Munich's goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
As a free-kick was swung into the box, Kane climbed the ladder to battle for an aerial duel before his jaw made contact with Hincapie's shoulder.
