In their debut LaLiga campaign, Girona continue to impress with the club extending their fine run with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club on Sunday.
It was the first look at the Basque club's altered defensive line following the departure of Aymeric Laporte and the signing of Inigo Martinez.
The former Real Sociedad centre-half started the match but could do nothing when Andoni Lopez was penalised inside his own penalty area, which handed the hosts a golden opportunity to open the scoring.
Christian Stuani stepped up to take the spot-kick and slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Statistics can often misrepresent a football match and Athletic Club's performance was very much misleading if you look at the possession numbers.
The visitors had 61 percent possession throughout the match, yet they didn't manage a single shot on target.
Girona on the other hand were happy to allow the Basque club to control the ball in areas of little danger and in turn took three shots on goal. The hosts doubled their lead just after the hour mark, Portu played an accurate aerial pass towards Stuani and the Uruguayan scored with a fine header.
It was a goal which totally ended Athletic Club's chances of victory; they never truly tested the two-goal lead held by Girona.
Another defeat leaves Los Rojiblancos in 13th place but 10 points clear of the relegation zone, the hosts on the other hand are well cemented in the top 10 and are eyeing a run at Europa League qualification.
