Where are the stars from the Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament now?

Euro 2020 was a tournament unlike any witnessed before it. Firstly, it was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Secondly, for the first time in the tournament's history there was no host nation, with matches being held in stadiums across eleven European countries.

Once the action had finally commenced fans were treated to a spectacle, with teams producing pulsating performances from the group stages all the way through to the final at Wembley.

The 2.78 goals-per-game ratio was the highest of any European Championship since 1980, and we were blessed with some truly spectacular matches, making it difficult for a team of the tournament to be selected.

Here is where the eleven players from Euro 2020's Team of The Tournament are now, three years on from the memorable competition as we gear up for Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.

Goalkeeper - Gianluigi Donnarumma (ITA)

Heading into Euro 2020, a fresh faced Gianluigi Donnarumma had big boots to fill as it would be Italy's first major tournament without Buffon in almost two decades.

Despite only being 20-years-old Donnarumma had a fountain of experience heading into the tournament, breaking into AC Milan's starting eleven at just 16 before racking up over 200 appearances for his boyhood club.

His performances throughout the tournament attracted interest from Europe's top dogs and with the expiration of his contract that summer with the Rossoneri, the Italian decided to join French giants PSG.

Now aged 25, the Italian is still No.1 for his nation and has won three consecutive Ligue 1 titles with PSG.

However the 2020 Golden Glove winner hasn't quite lived up to his summer showing that year and has failed to go up the gears and become the best 'keeper in the world' as so many thought he would.

Right-back - Kyle Walker (ENG)

Kyle Walker headed into Euro 2020 battling Trent Alex-Arnold for both the Premier League title against Liverpool and for his position with England.

The vastly experienced defender prevailed, coming out on top on both occasions.

Since then Walker has gone on to reach unimaginable heights, securing the Treble with City during the 2022-23 season and winning an unprecedented four-in-a-row Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola, he even captained their latest in 2023-24.

Despite his age, Walker has retained his status as Gareth Southgate's go-to at right-back amid strong competition. Walker will be 34-years-old when Euro 2024 gets underway this summer in Germany and is expected to play a pivotal role for the Three Lions.

Centre-back - Leonardo Bonucci (ITA)

Italian legend Bonucci got the fairy-tale ending every player dreams of when it comes to ending their national career - The Italian Legend bowed out from his last major tournament with the Azzurri's crowned a champion.

The 37-year-old did not only show up at Euro 2020 but he played an instrumental role in Roberto Mancini's squad, scoring in the final at Wembley, whilst also producing a solid performance in Italy's defence alongside his long-serving partner-in-crime Giorgio Chiellini.

It was Bonucci however who capped off his last dance in finer fashion, nipping a spot in the Team of the tournament ahead of his Azzurri team-mate.

Bonucci would continue to play for the Serie A giants up until 2023 before announcing his retirement in May 2024 after completing a season with Bundesliga side Union Berlin in an eyebrow-raising move which stumped many.

Centre-back - Harry Maguire (ENG)

Harry Maguire is the first 2020 Euro Team of the Tournament player to not get the nod from his country for Euro 2024 of those still playing.

Maguire, who remains the most expensive defender in history, will miss this summer's European Championships due to a calf injury he picked up in April and failed to recover from in time.

This will be Gareth Southgate's first major tournament without the Manchester United defender.

However, despite initial fears, it may not be that big of a loss given that the English defender's stock has fallen immensely over the past few years and the emergence of young stars like Jarrad Branthwaite and Jarell Quansah may see the 31-year-old lose his spot in Southgate's squad permanently.

Left-back - Leonardo Spinazzola (ITA)

Despite missing the semi-final and final of Euro 2022, Spinazzola's impressive display at the tournament was not to be forgotten.

Before sustaining a late injury in the quarter-final against Belgium, he was prolific for the Azzuri's running up and down the pitch relentlessly and he made a spectacular goal-line clearance which kept the Blues in the tournament.

This time round however Spinazzola will stand no chance of earning a back-to-back spot in the Euro Team of the Tournament as the Roma defender has been left out of Italy's title defending squad.

It is not too much of a shock that Spinazzola didn't make Italy's Euro roster though, since Euro 2020 he has battled numerous injuries including a serious achilles tendon rupture.

Defensive midfield - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (DEN)

Only one of three players who was not involved in the final back in 2021 to make it into the Team of the Tournament, Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is another player on this list who was better-regarded back then than he is now.

Hojbjerg went into Euro 2020 off the back of any incredible debut season with Tottenham and played a pivotal role in Denmark's surprising campaign which saw them make it all the way to the semi-finals.

Despite uncertainty at club level, with questions being asked about whether he fits in Postecoglou's plans, there is no doubt that the now 28-year-old will be one of the first names in Denmark's starting eleven this summer.

Defensive midfield - Jorginho (ITA)

Jorginho did not just enjoy an excellent tournament for Italy at the Euros but he had a remarkable season at his then-club Chelsea.

The Italian midfielder lifted the Champions League and Euro trophy in the same season, playing a significant role in both team's winning campaigns. He ended up on the Ballon d’Or podium in 2021, and was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year (the only Italian to win the award) for his efforts.

In 2023, Jorginho left Stamford Bridge to join London rivals Arsenal, where he has proven himself an useful asset despite not being a regular starter. He will represent Italy this summer in Germany.

Central Midfield - Pedri (SPA)

Spain's brightest and one of their youngest stars at Euro 2020 was Pedri.

Questions were posed heading into the tournament on how the Barcelona wonder-kid would fare at a major international tournament considering he had already played over 2000 minutes for the La Liga side.

Only 18-years-old at the time, Pedri excelled for the Spanish outfit, no more so than in their semi-final clash against Italy. However since 2021, it seems as though all those minutes have caught up to the young man.

Now 21-years-old, Pedri has averaged only 15 La Liga starts since Euro 2020, in seasons which have been run rampant with injuries.

Despite his struggles with injury, the Spanish midfielder has proven time and time again that when he is fit, he is somebody everybody should want in their starting eleven

Right-wing forward - Federico Chiesa (ITA)

Chiesa was the surprise star for Italy at Euro 2020, the Fiorentina forward at the time did not start in Italy's opening two games but emerged as Italy's secret weapon in their third-group game and continued to be the match to ignite Italy's fire on route to lifting the Euro 2020 trophy.

Since the tournament, he secured a dream move to Juventus in 2022 which quickly turned into a nightmare after he spent the majority of the 2022-23 season sidelined due to a cruciate ligament tear.

The forward has since returned to action for the Italian outfit, making 33 league appearances and scoring nine goals this season and will be hoping he can imitate his form from the previous tournament in Euro 2024.

Striker - Romelu Lukaku (BEL)

Belgian's talisman Romelu Lukaku had an outstanding solo performance for Belgium at Euro 2020, scoring four goals for Belgium before they got knocked out by Italy during the quarter-final stages.

The Roma player has scored eighty-tree goals in 114 appearances for the Red Devils, and it would be no surprise if the infamous striker finishes his national career with over 100 goals.

A feat which has been accomplished by very little and would put him in a category among the world's best including Ronaldo and Messi.

Despite his ability to pounce in-front of goal, the Belgian been on a slight decline since his big-money return to Stamford Bridge.

Over the past three seasons, the forward has played for Chelsea, Inter Milan and Roma and has yet to find a team to call home as Chelsea look to offload their big-money signing.

Despite his inability to find form on his return to the Bridge, Lukaku has still managed 50 goals in three seasons, which is no means a terrible stat.

Left-wing forward - Raheem Sterling (ENG)

It wasn't too long ago when Raheem Sterling was regarded as one of the top forwards in the Premier League and was a guaranteed name on Southgate's teamsheets.

The Manchester City forward at the time of Euro 2020 played a massive role in the Three Lions success in making it to the final.

However since then things have unfolded rather unkindly for the England international. Having being axed by Pep Guardiola in 2022, the now 29-year-old completed a move to Chelsea where he has matched Chelsea's struggle to find form.

Although he has shown glimpses of his former self, Sterling is far from the player he once was, which has resulted in him not receiving a ticket to Germany on England's plane this summer.
