Korbin Albert apologises for sharing homophobic and transphobic post

Korbin Albert (20), a rising star for Paris Saint-Germain and the US women’s national team has apologised for sharing a homophobic and transphobic post on TikTok.

Albert was accused of sharing a Christian sermon that denounced being gay and transgender, while screenshots were shared this week accusing the midfielder of liking posts that appeared to celebrate Megan Rapinoe’s (38) injury that ended her international career.

The two players play in the same position, and Albert has even inherited the now-retired international’s number 15 when playing for the USWNT.

Albert’s actions were a surprise considering the USWNT has become a leading light in the fight for equality and against discrimination, with multiple ambassadors both past and present within the team.

Rapinoe has responded albeit without naming Albert on Instagram, with the former international criticising players that want “To hide behind ‘my beliefs’ I would just ask one question are you making any type of space safer, more inclusive, more whole, any semblance of better, bringing the best out of anyone?”

Albert has since then responded to the criticisms by releasing a public statement across her social media, “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on social media. Liking and sharing posts that are offensive, insensitive and hurtful was immature and disrespectful which was never my intent.”

The midfielder continued, “I truly believe that everyone should feel safe and respected everywhere and on all playing fields. I know my actions have not lived up to that and I sincerely apologize. It’s an honor and a privilege to get to play this sport on the world stage and I promise to do better.”
