The Spanish national team posted a bizarre tweet in support of loathed head coach Jorge Vilda, moments after Spain secured a 1-0 win over England in the World Cup final.

Vilda has come under immense fire in recent months as 15 of the Spanish national team withdrew from the squad, 12 of whom returned to be called up before the World Cup.

In a strange turn of events, despite public backlash from Spanish fans, the Spanish national team tweeted 'VILDA IN' with a photo of the head coach kissing the World Cup trophy, sparking outrage amongst fans.

The player revolt had clouded much of Spain's progress in the tournament, though the boos which met Vilda's name in Stadium Australia could not been ignored.

It comes as Spanish FA Chief Luis Rubiales planted a kiss on the lips of Jennifer Hermoso, sparking another controversy in the World Cup winning squad.

Tensions were rising after Spain were knocked out of the 2022 European Championships by England.

Irene Paredes - with over 100 Spanish caps to her name - called for 'systemic change' on the Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) treatment of the women's national team.

Despite all of this, Vilda survived the talk surrounding his role and rumours that he would be sacked.

15 players announced their withdrawal from the national team.

Aitana Bonmati, Mariona Caldentey, Ona Batlle, Patri Guijarro, Mapi Leon, Sandra Panos, Claudia Pina, Lola Gallardo, Ainhoa Moraza, Nerea Eizagirre, Amaiur Sarriegi, Lucia Garcia, Leila Ouahabi, Laia Aleixandri and Andrea Pereira were the players who sent the emails.

Only three of the names above were eventually called up to the World Cup squad - with one of the world's best, Mapi Leon, missing out.

Reportedly, Vilda banned players from locking their hotel rooms, carried out room checks, and went through their bags like 'children'.

Vilda was not the only figure sparking outrage at the final. Jennifer Hermoso was seen to be kissed on the lips by Spanish FA Chief, Luis Rubiales.

After the match, she was asked about the embrace after the match by Spanish TV station La 1 and, appearing somewhat uncomfortable, told them: 'Eh... yeah, I did not enjoy that.'

Footage of the kiss has gone viral online since it was seen on air, with some supporters saying Rubiales' behaviour was inappropriate.

But while the Spanish team's victory was keenly watched by the country's royals, no member of the British Royal Family went to Australia to cheer on the Lionesses.

Spain secured a final 1-0 victory in Sydney on Sunday, following Olga Carmona's first-half goal, however, Sarina Wiegman's side still achieved a best-ever second-place finish.
