Yves Bissouma will wear a new number on the back of his Tottenham shirt in the 2023/24 season after previously wearing No.38 for the Lilywhites following his move from Brighton last summer
Yves Bissouma has been handed Tottenham's famous No.8 shirt ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Joining Spurs from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, it was confirmed before the Lilywhites' pre-season tour of South Korea that the Mali international would wear the No.38 shirt, with fellow new arrival Ivan Perisic wearing No.22.
Tottenham did state at the time that "the numbers worn by these two players during pre-season may not be representative of their finalised squad numbers for 2022/23". Whereas Perisic did changes numbers and took on his preferred No.14 shirt after Joe Rodon agreed to trade with him after the Croat had personally phoned his teammate, Bissouma, in the end, remained with the No.38.
Appearing that it was linked to Harry Winks' future as the midfielder was in possession of the No.8 shirt that Bissouma had worn in his four seasons with Brighton, Winks still remained a Tottenham player on the eve of the Premier League season when Spurs' shirt numbers were officially confirmed and it wasn't until the end of the month when he finally departed on loan to Sampdoria. As a result, the No.8 jersey was left vacant over the course of the season as Bissouma played with No.38 on his back.
Shirt numbers for new signings James Maddison and Manor Solomon, as well as Destiny Udogie who spent last season on loan with Udinese, have yet to be confirmed ahead of the new season, with Tottenham revealing that the full squad list will be finalised prior to the opening weekend of the season.
A statement on the official website read: "Supporters should note that all other squad numbers – with the exception of the number 13 shirt, which was assigned to Guglielmo Vicario upon his arrival earlier this summer – remain subject to change, with the full finalised list to be confirmed when the club submits its final squad list to the Premier League prior to the opening weekend of the 2023/24 season."
