Coventry star Viktor Gyokeres closing in on move to Sporting Lisbon

Viktor Gyokeres is set to leave Coventry for Sporting Lisbon in the coming days with the Championship club anticipating a fee of up to £20.5million for the striker.

The Swede did not travel with the rest of the squad to their Portuguese pre-season training camp but was due in the country's capital to finalise his move to Sporting this week.

Gyokeres had only one year remaining on his contract, meaning the Sky Blues risked losing him for free if they declined all interest this summer.

Coventry's defeat by Luton in the Championship play-off final in May virtually guaranteed the 25-year-old's departure.

Gyokeres scored 22 times for Mark Robins' side last season and established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards outside the Premier League.

Top-flight clubs including West Ham and Everton showed an interest but Sporting were the club who made a firm move.

Along with Gyokeres, Gustavo Hamer was the star of Coventry's 2022-23 campaign and also has just a year remaining on his contract.

Fulham are following the Brazilian-born Dutch midfielder closely, who is still working his way towards full fitness after injury forced him off during the play-off final.

'For me, the focus is now on a step up towards the Premier League, but a return to Feyenoord (where he was a youth player) would also be extremely attractive,' Hamer told Dutch football website Voetbal Primeur earlier this year.

'Other top leagues would also be nice, but these are my real goals now. England attracted me very much and Coventry was a perfect step. Here I was sure that I would play regularly.'
