The football awards season is not just round the corner. The UNFP (Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels), the French equivalent of the PFA, have revealed their nominees to succeed Rennes’ Bruno Genesio as Ligue 1 coach of the year. And for the third time in a row, it won’t be the man in the PSG dugout. Indeed, PSG manager Christophe Galtier have been omitted from a 5-time shortlist that includes Lens’ Franck Haise, Marseille’s Igor Tudor, Clermont’s Pascal Gastien, Lille’s Paulo Fonseca and Toulouse’s Philippe Montanier. Haise is the favourite to be crowned Ligue 1 coach of the year. The winner will be revealed during the Trophées UNFP ceremony on May 28.
Even if PSG were to clinch a record 11th league title, it has been a difficult season for Galtier. Les Parisiens’ form has faltered since the World Cup. The Marseille-born manager has also been at the center of controversy amid allegations of discriminatory remarks he allegedly held last season at Nice. Galtier has strongly denied those accusations. The 3-time Ligue 1 coach of the year (2013, 2019 and 2021) is not expected to remain in the PSG dugout next season.
