Real Madrid recovered from losing Karim Benzema to injury in the first half to kick off their defence of the Champions League with a 3-0 win over Celtic.

Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard scored the goals in the second half.

Celtic started brightly with the home crowd up for it in Glasgow and almost opened the scoring when Callum McGregor hit the post.

The Scottish champions chances of success appeared to increase when Benzema exited with a knee injury after 30 minutes.

But Celtic could not keep up the pace in the second half and Madrid blew them away.

Vinicius opened the scoring in the 56th minute, turning home a Fede Valverde cross.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 when Modric was afforded too much space in the box and he produced a typically brilliant finish with the outside of his boot.

Substitute Hazard completed the scoring in the 77th minute from close range after good work from Toni Kroos and Dani Carvajal.
