Everton manager Frank Lampard thinks his team were deserving of a point at Villa Park as they fell just short of completing a remarkable come-back.
Villa looked set to beat the Toffees comfortably and pick up their first clean sheet of the season after goals from Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia, until Lucas Digne's late own-goal which encouraged Everton to try and push for an equaliser.
The Villans were able to hold on to all three points and pick up their first Premier League points of the season, whereas Everton remain without a point having lost both of their first two games of the Premier League campaign.
After the game, Frank Lampard told BT Sport: 'I thought we should have got a draw at end of the game. We had two or three really good chances late on.
'When we were set defensively and organised, I don't think they gave us huge problems. When we gave the ball away on a couple of transitions, they got two goals.
'That's the reality of Premier League football, you can't make those mistakes. We got punished for that. At the end, the spirit was good and you come away with a bad feeling you come away with a bad feeling that you didn't get a point.
'Without a genuine focal point, the three players up there have to be really active and mobile and be strong when you're receiving balls to feet. It's very common in the Premier League that teams play without a focal point.
'It's been put on us a little bit, but in the second half we were much better and you saw the threat straightaway. When you don't have that focal point it can make you less of a threat and we are looking at that.
'In two games now we have used a sub for an injury in the first half. When you have to make a sub and a change then it can affect the team no matter who you lose or are bringing in. It's an important factor, not the factor.'
However, Lampard's former England teammate and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard believes his side were deserving of all three points against Everton, despite a nervy end to the game.
After the game Gerrard told BT Sport:' I'd say so. I think we had large pockets of control and could have scored another couple of goals. I always expected when we conceded that poor goal there would be nervousness and they were going to try and pile balls into our box.
'It was a big test of our character and our resilience and it's not easy when you lose a central defender in that situation. The conditions were tough for both sets of players.
'We did enough to get over the line and I don't think anyone can point any fingers in terms of the outcome of the game. I think we deserved our win.'
Gerrard was also full of praise for the impact made by his substitutes, one which proved to be the match-winner in the shape of Buendia.
He said: 'The players can take the credit for that. They have to go out there and carry out the gameplan.
'We knew we would play against three central defenders today so we wanted to be aggressive and be brave. We felt last week that we were getting suffocated a bit in the box so adding another body in there gave them something to think about.'
' Young Emi Buendia's little one-two for the final pass, if there's any kids watching, that is pure quality. The way he slows the play down and still executes the quality under that pressure. It was a fantastic second goal.'
Buendia came on the pitch at the hour mark to replace Philippe Coutinho, who was forced off the pitch through injury. Gerrard has given an update on the Brazilian's condition, hoping that it is only cramp that cost him his place on the pitch.
He said:' We are hoping it's cramp. It was a really tough game for both sets of players, he had to run hard and chase hard. I think it just caught up with him in the end. That was always the plan to bring Buendia's energy.
'He is really pushing to start at the moment but he was certainly winning the race before that setback to be a starter because he is showing real quality, he's showing energy, aggression and doing both sides of the game extremely well.'
