Former Barcelona manager Quique Setien is reportedly on the brink of ending his two-year absence from the dugout as he is set to become the new head coach of Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab.

The 63-year-old spent seven months at the Nou Camp, taking charge of 25 matches and winning 16 of them.

However, he is best remembered for overseeing Barcelona's 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals in August 2020, which proved to be his final game at the helm.

Setien also lost his only El Clasico as manager, and had his tactics questioned by Lionel Messi, with the Argentine superstar asking to leave the club after the humiliating loss to Bayern.

The experienced manager has not been seen on the touchline since being relieved of his duties by Barcelona, but he has now agreed to take over at Al-Shabab, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The deal will see Setien and his four-man coaching team earn €3.7million per season (£3.2m) between them.

Setien has only managed outside of Spain once before when he briefly took charge of Equatorial Guinea back in 2006.

Apart from Barcelona, his most notable roles have been at Lugo, who he guided back into LaLiga, and at Real Betis, where he took the team into Europe.

This led to him being picked up by Barcelona as he replaced Ernesto Valverde, but his time at the Catalan giants would be short-lived.

He will now look to restore his managerial reputation at Al-Shabab, who have won the Saudi Arabia Premier League on six occasions, although they have not claimed the title for the past decade.
