The Copa del Rey last 16 game between city rivals Real Betis and Sevilla will be restarted this afternoon behind closed doors after Joan Jordan was hit with a metal pole thrown from the crowd.

The game will start again from the 39th minute with the score level at 1-1 after the tie was abandoned last night after an object thrown from the stands hit visiting midfielder Joan Jordan.

The 27-year-old fell to the ground in pain after being struck by the object just moments after Betis' Nabil Fekir had made it 1-1 just before half-time.

Jordan eventually managed to get to his feet after receiving medical attention, but the game was called off, and he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with 'traumatic brain injury'.

The player is at home under observation for at least 24 hours to check if he experiences further symptoms.

A club statement read: 'Sevilla FC would like to convey all its affection to Joan Jordan, who fortunately, and this is undoubtedly the only important thing, is at home after being hit by an object thrown from the home stand during the derby.

'Joan left the Benito Villamarín dazed and was taken to hospital, where he was examined and underwent a series of tests required by the protocol due to the concussion.

'The final diagnosis is cranioencephalic trauma and the player will be kept under home observation until a minimum period of 24 hours has passed without any alarming symptoms.

'Sevilla FC condemns the violent act suffered today by Joan Jordan, an unacceptable act in the world of sport committed by an individual who, of course, does not represent the fans of Real Betis or the way of living football in our city.

'Likewise, the club demands the utmost respect for Joan Jordan, a true professional and an exemplary person who has suffered an appalling attack.'

Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea handed the object to stadium officials and, after conferring with respective managers Manuel Pellegrini and Julen Lopetegui, play was suspended.

Sevilla’s players and coaches went down the tunnel to the dressingroom, while Betis remained on the pitch as De Burgos Bengoetxea consulted with officials.

Almost an hour after the incident, the Spanish federation (RFEF) announced that the game had been abandoned, without giving further details.
