On November 27, 2011, British football was shocked to its core at the unexpected death of footballer and manager Gary Speed after he committed suicide aged just 42.
A decade on from his death Speed has been remembered by football fans from all over the UK as his loss is mourned by his family, friends and fans.
From Leeds United to Newcastle
Speed began his career as a youngster at Leeds United in the late 1980s into the mid 1990s as a talented midfielder who carried himself off the pitch as he did on it, with professionalism and class.
After making 248 appearances for the West Yorkshire side, the Welshman had a two-year stint at his boyhood club of Everton, before coming into his own once more at Newcastle United where he featured over 200 times for the club.
Under the management of Sir Bobby Robson, Speed was at the heart of Newcastle's most successful period in recent years which saw them reach the Champions League.
Wales through and through
Born in Mancot, Wales, Speed was proud of his country and made his international debut in May 1990 against Costa Rica, and represented Wales until 2004, bagging 85 caps in the process. His importance to the squad was recognised immediately and Speed eventually became captain in 1998.
An eye for management
Following his time at Newcastle, Speed was signed by Sam Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers in 2004 and the player remained at the club until 2008. He became first-team coach after Allardyce left in May 2007, with many noting his credentials as a manager.
Instead of going straight into management, Speed saw out his final year at Bolton as a player before moving to Sheffield United.
Whilst at Sheffield United the player completed his coaching badges before eventually replacing Kevin Blackwell as coach towards the end of the 2010/11 season. He finished his playing career with 536 Premier League appearances.
Despite his inexperience, his performances and leadership in the dressing room whilst playing led to his appointment as Wales's manager in December 2010 after John Toshack had left the position.
Speed took charge of his first game in February 2011, which his side lost 3-0 to the Republic of Ireland, and less than a year later he had taken his own life.
