Iago Aspas' performance should put him in the frame for the World Cup

There are certain games where an international player shows his quality and Iago Aspas played the perfect match at the Camp Nou, just a day after Spain found out their group phase opponents for the World Cup in Russia.

The Celta Vigo forward was a constant threat and helped hold the hosts to a 2-2 draw as he provided both a goal and an assist.

The forward often carries the team on his back, however when facing Barcelona his contributions were even more noticeable. Aspas is meeting all the expectations laid out by Julen Lopetegui for him to be part of the Spanish squad heading to Russia in the summer. He is scoring goals and showing consistency.

Despite playing at Barcelona's stadium, he led the visitors at all times, opening the space up to provide an opportunity for Maxi Gomez in the first half and in the second, he won a foot race with Samuel Umtiti, that left the French defender injured, wriggled away from Jordi Alba and was once again able to find a pass to Gomez.

The former Liverpool forward brings something different to Celta's attack. He is not a conventional player, his job is to create danger all across the front line, be that by scoring himself or providing key passes for teammates. He is likely to appear where nobody expects him to be.

In the race to secure a place in the World Cup squad, Aspas is up against Alvaro Morata, Rodrigo Moreno and Diego Costa, who only has from January onwards to prove himself.
