Liverpool's pursuit of Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma could have received a huge fillip, with Arsenal understood to be exploring other options.
Bissouma, 24, has been heavily linked to both the Gunners and the Reds after another fine campaign for Graham Potter's side, with the asking price reportedly set at £40million.
And football reporter Fabrizio Romano indicated Liverpool may now lead the race for the Mali international.
He said: 'I'm told he's not the hottest name for Arsenal, you know. They are looking for something different.'
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had reportedly viewed Bissouma as the perfect midfield partner for Thomas Partey, but may now be looking for a player with different strengths.
The 19-cap international is thought to be a boyhood Gunners fan but could now be more likely to move to Anfield alongside the likes of Thiago and captain Jordan Henderson.
Bissouma, whose contract expires in 2023, has impressed in his three seasons at the Amex since signing in July 2018 with his energy, anticipation and tenacious style of play winning plenty of admirers across the Premier League.
The club are not keen to sell him by any stretch but reportedly accept they may have to sell if a big offer comes in, with Reading's Josh Laurent eyed up as a potential replacement.
Brighton travel to Arsenal on the final day of the domestic campaign, with Arteta's side realistically needing a win to qualify for European football next season and Potter's outfit looking to reach lower mid-table.
