On March 6, 2020, Real Madrid celebrated 118 years since being founded.
But the club began in 1902 as Madrid Club de Futbol.
The 'Real' part of their name wasn't adopted until June 29, 1920, making today the 100-year anniversary of when Madrid became Real Madrid.
King Alfonso XIII granted Madrid the title of 'Real' on 29 June 1920, sending their president Pedro Parages a letter granting him the right to use it.
"His Majesty the King is most pleased to grant the title of 'Real' to this football club, of which you are worthy president and which, from now on, can be put before its name," the brief letter sent to the president said.
"I hereby inform you that the Royal Order has been granted to you for your information and for the ensuing purposes.
"May God keep you for many years."
The name of the club would go on to change again after 1920.
During the Republic, 'Real' was removed from the club's official name before being reinstated after the Civil War, and it has been used ever since.
From then onwards, Real Madrid were also permitted to wear the royal crown as part of their badge.
Moreover, in response to the granting of such a privilege, Parages appointed Alfonso, Prince of Asturias as the club's honorary president.
