After a long investigation, it has been determined that the death of an Arizona man who drank fish tank cleaner to try to guard against the coronavirus isn't being treated as a homicide.

Gary Lenius, was was 68, had ingested a version of chloroquine phosphate intended to treat fish for parasites in late March.

Just 30 minutes after ingesting the concoction he began to feel unwell.

The side effects he was feeling were so bad that he ended up in hospital, where he would lose his life.

It's also worth noting that his wife ended up in a critical condition too.

She managed to recover and the initial assumption was that the two had confused the liquid with hydroxychloroquine, the medicine that had been proven to cure malaria and had been used to treat early cases of COVID-19, although medical professionals are yet to confirm this.

The married couple took a tablespoon of the chemical, which has been established as a highly dangerous dose.

Police in Mesa City, Arizona, did actually open an investigation into the death of Mr. Lenius, with his wife Wanda considered a suspect.

This came after friends and close family members revealed a history of domestic violence within the marriage, which has since become clouded in doubt.

The Arizona police have now dismissed this as a possibility and the death has been ruled to not be a homicide.

"The death of Gary Lenius has not been ruled a homicide at this time," Mesa police spokesman Jason Flam told NBC News.
