Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that he will apply for an extension to Spain's State of Emergency until May 9.

The prime minister's request will have to be approved by the cabinet when they meet on Wednesday before it can come into effect.

Each Saturday, Sanchez holds a videoconference with the Spanish government's Scientific Committee to hear their thoughts on the situation.

The unanimous view is that lockdown must be enforced for another 15 days past the initial deadline of April 26.

The prime minister also announced that flexibility over the current lockdown rules would be considered.

People may be allowed to leave their homes for a brief period of time each day after April 27.
