Another 368 people have died over the last 24 hours in Italy after catching the coronavirus, taking the total death toll to 1,809, with 1,672 in intensive care.

The illness shows no signs of slowing down, as experts warn we have not yet reached the peak, just over three weeks into the crisis.

The lockdown measures will only begin to really show an improvement over the next few days.

Latest figures released by the Italian Government paint a horrifying picture and make very clear why football had to grind to a halt.

There are now 20,603 people suffering from coronavirus in the country, an increase of 2,853 positive tests compared to yesterday.

The number of deaths leapt forward with its worst 24 hours yet, an additional 368 people have died, taking the total to 1,809.

There are also currently 1,672 in intensive care, 767 of them in the Lombardy region, which is the epicentre of the Italian pandemic.

A further 9,663 are in hospital with symptoms, with another 9,268 self-isolating at home after testing positive.

That includes 11 Serie A players at Sampdoria, Fiorentina and Juventus.
