Aubameyang, Haaland & players who scored debut hat-tricks

Sure, it's impressive when a new club signing scores on their debut – but how about when they bag three goals in their first appearance?

Scoring a hat-trick in general is no easy feat, but these players have managed to do so in their full debut over the last 15 seasons across Europe's top-five leagues.

*Debuts in league competitions only.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Dortmund)

The Gabon international burst onto the Bundesliga scene in high-octane fashion with a hat-trick on his debut for Dortmund in 2013. Fresh on his arrival from St-Etienne, Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang scored thrice in the eventual 4-0 victory at Augsburg. He became just the third Bundesliga player in the history of the competition to score a hat-trick in his first appearance, following in the footsteps of Olaf Marshall (for Kaiserslautern in 1993) and Hermann Ohlicher (for Stuttgart in 1973).

Erling Haaland (Dortmund)

There must be something in the Bundesliga – or, more specifically, Dortmund – water. Erling Braut Haaland was a superstar in his own right at RB Salzburg, but certainly nobody anticipated what influence he’d have immediately upon his arrival at Dortmund in January 2020. The Norway international scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute against Augsburg, and eventually went on to strike a treble to secure a 5-3 victory for Dortmund. At just 19, Haaland became just the second Dortmund player to score a hat-trick on their Bundesliga debut after Aubameyang (coincidentally against the same team).

Andre Silva (Sevilla)

22-year-old Andre Silva bagged a hat-trick for Sevilla in his full debut, on loan from AC Milan, against Rayo Vallecano in 2018. After scoring two Serie A goals in 24 games the season before, he matched that tally for Sevilla in the opening 45 minutes for his new side, before adding a third goal to his tally in the second half.

Nils Petersen (Freiburg)

After making his switch from Werder Bremen to Freiburg permanent, Nils Petersen introduced himself to his new club spectacularly by scoring a hat-trick against Frankfurt in a 4-1 victory. Freiburg came from behind to win against Bremen, with Marco Russ firing Bremen ahead in the first minute – only for Freiburg to fire back, starting with Vladimir Darida’s equaliser in minute 62.

Johan Audel (Valenciennes)

Fresh Valenciennes signing Johan Audel got off the mark on his debut with a hat-trick against Toulouse, bagging his third goal in the 61st minute. Audel’s treble was already more than he managed the previous season for Lorient, and the eventual 3-1 victory catapulted Valenciennes to the top of Ligue 1 for the first time since 1978.

Martin Fenin (Frankfurt)

There was no better way for 20-year-old Martin Fenin to showcase his talents after moving from Czech side FK Teplice to the Bundesliga than with a treble against Hertha Berlin. It was his first ever hat-trick as well, and his three goals secured a 3-0 victory all by his own doing. It couldn’t have come against a better opponent, either – his Czech Republic countryman Jaroslav Drobny was in goal for the opposing team.
