The Stoke City midfielder has criticised the Scotland manager after being overlooked for the Tartan Army's clash with England

Charlie Adam has hit out at Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, claiming that his 'face doesn't fit' into Strachan's Tartan Army squad.

The Stoke City midfielder has not played for his country since June 2015, and blasted the international boss for his squad selection ahead of Friday's World Cup qualifier with England.

"I just don’t understand it at the moment, Adam told BBC Radio 5.

"He’ll probably say I’ve not played enough games but I disagree with him. He has given people an opportunity who haven’t played club football for a number of months.

"Obviously my face doesn’t fit at the moment. I’m not saying I’m the best player for Scotland but I feel I can add to what they have. We are not a nation with 50 or 60 top players.

"We aren’t England. We need our best players available. I saw the other day that Alan Hutton had retired. He’s only retired because he knows he isn’t going to get a game."

In another radio interview, Adam also singled out Scott Brown's return to the international fold, despite announcing his retirement in August.

"He’s just come straight back in to play against England," the 23-year-old said on TalkSport. "If I’m another player I’m going to be thinking: ‘what’s going on, why am I not getting an opportunity?’

"I understand he’s got 50 caps and he’s done well for his country, but once you retire let somebody else have an opportunity.

"They’ve been waiting for an opportunity for a long time. If he’s only going to come back for one game I don’t feel it’s right for the other players who are sat on the bench."

However, many Scottish fans on Twitter did not agree with Adam's viewpoint, expressing their opinion on his value to the national team:
