Israel boss Levy: 'We troubled Italy'

Israel Coach Elisha Levy had “some regret, as we went close to an equaliser” in the 1-0 World Cup qualifier defeat to Italy.

A Ciro Immobile header proved enough to separate the sides, but the Azzurri dominated possession and forced 18 corners.

“We went close to an equaliser and did create a few chances, so there is some regret, but overall I am satisfied,” said Levy in his Press conference.

“I am very happy with the performance of Ariel Harush in goal. We have several ‘keepers who are more or less on the same level, so he could well be first choice going forward.

“Perhaps the criticism was exaggerated after the defeat to Macedonia, but you always see things black or white, not with shades of grey. Macedonia are a very good side and don’t have the points they deserve.”

Eran Zahavi was banned for 12 months after throwing down the captain’s armband in that loss to Macedonia, but Levy also surprised by dropping striker Tal Ben Chaim.

“I don’t understand why we have to keep talking about Zahavi. He’s a good player, but he is not with us now.

“Italy have many important players, from Marco Verratti to Andrea Barzagli and Daniele De Rossi. They have every chance of going to the World Cup through the play-offs.

“We are proud that we made life difficult for them in an impossible group.”
