On this day in 1988 - Van Basten scored best-ever volley
That's a goal that words cannot define, it showed Van Basten's brilliant control of the ball perfectly. He gained a reputation as one of the most clinical marksmen.
With this best-ever volley goal, Netherlands won the 1988 European Championships.
On this day in 2007 - Thierry Henry joined Barcelona
In the Champions League final of 2006, Henry and Arsenal lost 2–1 to Barca.
Arsenal's inability to win the league title for two consecutive seasons combined with the relative inexperience of the Arsenal squad caused that Henry would leave for another club.
On 25 June 2007, Henry chose to join Barcelona who he lost to one year before.
At Barcelona, he finally completed his dream of winning champions and in 2009, he helped Barcelona win an unprecedented sextuple.
On this day in 1978, Argentina won their first World Cup
Playing the Final before a crowd of 71,483 at Buenos Aires' Estadio Monumental, Argentina took a 37th-minute lead with a goal from Valencia striker Mario Kempes. The Dutch, playing in their second consecutive Final, equalized with a header from midfielder Dick Nanninga in the 82nd minute.
In extra time, Kempes struck again in the 104th minute. Winger Daniel Bertoni added an insurance goal in the 115th minute to complete the day's scoring.
On this day in 2010, Cannavaro announced retirement from Italy
Cannavaro captained Italy to World Cup glory in 2006, anchoring a defence that surrendered only two goals, as a result of that performance, he finished as runner-up to Zidane in voting for the tournament's Golden Ball winner.
Cannavaro missed Euro 2008 and decided to return to help Italy defend their World Cup in 2010. Unfortunately, their campaign was a disaster, as they finished at the bottom of their first-round group. Cannavaro announced his international retirement the next day.
On this day in 2013 - Simon Mignolet signed with Liverpool
On 25 June 2013, Mignolet signed with Liverpool for a reported fee of £9 million on a five-year contract.
In the two consecutive UCL finals, Mignolet has been benched. He watched what Carius had done but finally became the winner in the second year.
On this day in 1997 - Juventus midfielder Bentancur was born
Betancur was signed by Juventus in 2017 from Boca Juniors, where he won two consecutive Serie A titles, among other trophies.
He made his senior debut for Uruguay in 2017 and later took part at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Copa América.
On this day in 1991, Spurs' midfielder Wanyama was born
Wanyama plays as a defensive midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur and captains the Kenyan national team.
He became the first ever Kenyan player to score in Champions League when he scored the first goal in Celtic's 2–1 win over Barcelona.
