Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (June 22nd) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 2017 - Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool

On 22 June 2017, Salah agreed a transfer to Liverpool. He signed a long-term contract with the Reds for an initial €42m fee that could rise to €50m. The fee was a club record, eclipsing the £35m spent on Andy Carroll in 2011. He was assigned the number 11 shirt previously worn by Roberto Firmino who instead switched to number 9. He joined the club on 1 July upon the opening of the summer transfer window, becoming Liverpool's first Egyptian player.

His second year, while less memorable on a personal level, ended with him rattling in his 27th goal of the season to put the Reds 1-0 up in the Champions League final against Tottenham just three weeks ago.

Now he has already made 104 appearances with 71 goals. He has won 2 Premier League Golden Boots and 2 African Player of the Year awards since he joined Reds.

On this day in 1986 - Diego Maradona scored twice to eliminate England from the World Cup, with the 'Hand of God'

The hand of God is the name given to the goal scored by Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona in the quarter-final match between Argentina and England at the 1986 World Cup on 22 June 1986 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. It could be the most famous goal in the World Cup history. The game ended with a 2–1 win for the Argentinians, thanks to the so-called "Goal of the Century", also scored by Maradona.

Tunisia's referee Ali Bennaceur validated the goal, but after the British players' demands, he sought the advice of his second standard bearer, who ratified the goal.

Mexican photographer Alejandro Ojeda Carbajal immortalized this moment in a photograph in which the blow is clearly seen with his hand.

On this day in 2002 - South Korea became the first Asian team to advance to the World Cup semifinals by controversial win against Spain

Co-hosts South Korea became the first Asian team to advance to the World Cup semifinals by beating Spain on penalties, 0-0 (3-5). Their win, however, came with a bit of controversy.

Spain dominated the first half, with 20-year old Betis midfielder Joaquín Sánchez providing a spark on the right side. But the South Korean defense proved stout and kept the match scoreless in the first half. Spain thought they cracked the Korean's back line mid-way through the second half when a Spanish free kick bounced into the net off the shoulder of Korean center back Kim Tae Young, but the referee disallowed the goal for an apparent foul.

In the second minute of extra time, Spain again thought they had the match-winner when Joaquín ran along the byline and chipped the ball into forward Fernando Morientes, who headed it into the goal. The referee disallowed that goal after the linesman signaled - incorrectly - that the ball had gone out of bounds before the pass.

In the ensuing shootout, Korea went first and were up 4-3 when Joaquín stepped up to the spot. But his shot was tame and easily saved by Korean keeper Lee Woon Jae. The final shot by Korean captain Hong Myung Bo then clinched the victory. South Korea advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to Germany 1-0.

On this day in 1980 - West Germany won the UEFA Euro championship

The UEFA Euro 1980 Final was a football match played on 22 June 1980 at Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy to determine the winner of UEFA Euro 1980. The match featured West Germany, runners-up in the previous edition of the competition, and Belgium.

Germany went on to win the match 2–1 after two goals by Horst Hrubesch, interposed by a Belgian penalty successfully converted by René Vandereycken

On this day in 1996 - Atletico Madrid starlet Rodrigo Hernández was born

Born in Madrid, Rodri joined Atlético Madrid's youth setup in 2007 aged 11, from CF Rayo Majadahonda. Released in 2013 due to the "lack of physical strength", he subsequently signed with Villarreal CF.

On 24 May 2018, Rodri returned to Atlético after the club reached an agreement with Villarreal for his transfer. He signed a five-year contract with the Madrid side, for a fee in the region of €20 million plus 5 million in variables.

After playing for Spain at under-16, under-19 and under-21 levels, Rodri was first called by the full side on 16 March 2018 for two friendlies with Germany and Argentina. He made his debut five days later, replacing Thiago Alcântara late into the 1–1 draw against the former in Düsseldorf.

Now Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of landing Rodri to Etihad. Will the 'New Busquets' play under Guardiola?

On this day in 1993 - German goalkeeper Karius was born

On 24 May 2016, Karius signed with Liverpool for a fee of £4.75 million on a five-year deal. He was given the number 1 jersey.

Karius started for Liverpool against Real Madrid in the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final which Liverpool lost 3–1. He was deemed at fault for two of the goals, the first and third; the first after his throw was blocked by Karim Benzema and deflected into the net, and the second after he mishandled Gareth Bale's 40-yard strike.

After the match, he wept and tearfully apologised to Liverpool fans who remained in the stands. He also stated that his mistakes "lost the team the final". After the match, Karius received online death threats, mainly on Twitter, which prompted Merseyside Police to launch an investigation. Five days later, Karius underwent an examination at Massachusetts General Hospital. Medics concluded he had suffered a concussion from an elbow to his head, reportedly from Sergio Ramos just minutes before his first mistake.

On 25 August 2018, Karius joined Turkish club Beşiktaş on a two-year loan move.
