Moeen Ali has made no secret of his love for Liverpool, and the England star received a welcome surprise ahead of the clash against Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup.

The 32-year-old made his 100th ODI appearance for England on Friday and in the dressing room before the game at Headingley he was shown a congratulatory video message from legendary former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Ali looked delighted as he watched Gerrard's message, while he was presented with his 100th cap by Eoin Morgan.

Ali made his ODI debut for England against the West Indies in 2014. He caught out Kusal Perera during the game against Sri Lanka.

Last month, in an interview with The Guardian, Ali spoke about Liverpool's run to the Champions League final, which culminated in the Reds beating Tottenham and winning Europe's elite club competition for the sixth time.

He said: 'This morning I woke up and thought about the way this Liverpool side have got people talking.

'It's not just results either, people have bought into how the club is being run, how they play their football and what they stand for.

Ali also spoke about Divock Origi, who was an unlikely hero as Liverpool enjoyed success in Europe.

He said: 'Look at a player like Divock Origi. No one was talking about the guy and then suddenly he becomes a hero. I reckon in playgrounds all around the country kids will now be pretending they are him and re‑enacting that goal.

'It makes you think, both as a player and as a team, what we could achieve this summer. Imagine what it would be like if we got to the World Cup final and won it.'

In 2015 Ali was named as an ambassador for Liverpool's official supporters club in Pakistan, Pak Reds.
