On this day in 1978, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was born
A three-time Chelsea Player of the Year, Lampard is the club's all-time top goalscorer with 211 goals in all competitions. Lampard is one of seven players, and the only midfielder, to have scored 150 or more goals in the Premier League. He is fourth in the Premier League's all-time assists table, with 102 assists. In 2005, Lampard was voted FWA Footballer of the Year and was runner-up in both the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or. In 2010. He has won 13 trophies in his career. Internationally, Lampard was capped 106 times by England and played at three World Cups – in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
Now Lampard is the manager of Championship club Derby County, but is set to conclude a return to Stamford Bridge this week where he will sign a three-year contract.
On this day in 2018, Ronaldo became the highest-scoring European in international football
The Portugal forward headed in a fourth-minute cross from the right to give Portugal a 1-0 victory on Wednesday. It was his 85th goal for his country, the most for any European player in almost 150 years of international soccer.
Ronaldo celebrated his goal by pointing at his chest during a trademark run and soaring leap toward the corner flag at the Luzhniki Stadium.
The goal moved the 33-year-old Ronaldo ahead of Ferenc Puskas, another Real Madrid great who scored his last goal for Hungary in 1956. He is alone in second place worldwide behind Ali Daei's 109 goals for Iran.
On this day in 1995, Arsenal signed Dennis Bergkamp
In 1993, he was signed by Inter for £12 million. over his two seasons in Milan, he scored only 10 goals in 50 appearances before being signed by Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch in the summer of 1995.
He made his debut on 19 August 1995 against Middlesbrough but did not score until his seventh match. He finished the season with 16 goals in 43 appearances. His Arsenal career truly began to flourish, however, with the arrival of manager Arsène Wenger in September 1996 and he was a key member of the Invincibles, Arsenal's unbeaten league side of 2003-04.
In all, Bergkamp made 411 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 120 goals. With Bergkamp, Arsenal won three Premier League titles and four FA Cup trophies. He retired from playing after the 2005-06 season.
On this day in 1976, Panenka penalty was born
Czechoslovakia won the first major international tournament to be decided by a penalty shootout, beating West Germany in the European Championship Final.
Czech midfielder Antonín Panenka stepped up to the spot. As keeper Sepp Maier dove to his left, Panenka chipped the ball right down the middle to secure the title.
On this day in 1993, Arsenal defender Kolasinac was born
Kolašinac is regarded as a versatile defender who can slot into all defensive positions as needed.
Kolašinac scored on his debut against Chelsea in the 2017 FA Community Shield, which Arsenal won on penalties. He made his Premier League debut on the opening day, providing an assist in a 4–3 win over Leicester City. On 14 September, Kolašinac scored on his UEFA Europa League debut against 1. FC Köln, which Arsenal won 3–1. He scored his first goal in the Premier League on 28 October against Swansea City, and also provided an assist for his team's other goal in a 2–1 victory.
On this day in 1997, Liverpool starlet Joe Gomez was born
Gomez prefers to play as a centre back but can also play as a full back on either side. He has been described as a complete footballer and composed ball-playing centre back with his style of play being compared to that of Rio Ferdinand whom he idolised growing up.
Gomez has struggled with injuries during his time at Liverpool but appeared in the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final as Liverpool won the competition.
On this day in 1989, Roma star Pastore was born
An elegant, creative and technically gifted advanced playmaker, with excellent dribbling skills and close control, Pastore is capable of playing in several offensive roles, due to his ability to both score and create goals.
Pastore began his club career with Talleres and then Huracán in his native Argentina before moving to Serie A team Palermo in 2009 for a reported transfer fee of €4.7 million. In 2011, French side Paris Saint-Germain bought him for a reported €39.8 million. He won numerous domestic honours with the club, including five Ligue 1 titles, before joining Roma in 2018, for a fee of €24.7 million.
On this day in 2007, Riquelme secured sixth Copa Libertadores for Boca Juniors
Riquelme added a sixth goal in the final's first leg, a 3-0 win at the Bombanera on 13 June. But he really shined in the second leg at Grêmio's Estádio Olímpico, scoring the day's only goals with strikes in the 68th and 81st minutes to seal the title. His performance led Boca to sign him on a permanent basis and he has remained with them ever since.
