On this day in 2011- Liverpool signed Henderson
On 9 June 2011, Henderson was transferred to Liverpool for an undisclosed fee, thought to be between £16 and £20 million. He made his debut in Liverpool's first match of the 2011–12 Premier League, a 1–1 draw against his former club Sunderland.
In August 2012, Henderson was told he would be allowed to join Fulham by new manager Brendan Rodgers, but this was rejected by the player.
Henderson established himself as a regular member of the Liverpool team in the 2013–14 season, playing in 35 Premier League matches, following the departure of Steven Gerrard in June 2015, Henderson was made the captain of Liverpool.
Henderson signed a new five-year deal at Liverpool in 2018 after leading the club to its first UEFA Champions League final in over a decade.
On 1 June 2019, Henderson captained Liverpool in a 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid, becoming the fifth Liverpool captain to lift the Champions League trophy, the club's sixth overall.
On this day in 2007 - Messi scored that 'Maradona goal'
Lionel Messi’s handball versus Espanyol may not make many peoples' heads turn due to it not being on the world stage and instead league play.
The goal was pivotal for Barcelona staying in the title race in that season, but even more important was the addition to Lionel Messi’s myth.
Its shocking similarities to Messi’s fellow countrymen Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal was a sign for many that Messi was going to be Argentine’s next magician.
On this day in 1978 - Top scorer of World Cup Miroslav Klose was born
Klose is best known for his performances with the Germany national team. He was part of the German squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup, having previously finished second (2002) and third (2006, 2010) in the competition, and as runner-up in UEFA Euro 2008 and joint-third place in UEFA Euro 2012.
Klose is the top goalscorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup with 16 goals, having scored five goals in his debut World Cup in 2002 and having won the Golden Boot at the 2006 World Cup in Germany by again scoring five times. He also scored four times in the 2010 World Cup and twice at the 2014 World Cup, the latter tournament where he overtook Ronaldo's then-record of 15 goals to top the all-time list. Klose is also the top scorer of all time for Germany. He retired from Germany's national team on 11 August 2014.
At club level, Klose has been a less prolific but usually reliable goalscorer. Starting his career at FC 08 Homburg, he played in the Bundesliga for Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich, and in Serie A for Lazio. He won two league titles with Bayern, along with cup competitions at Bayern, Werder Bremen and Lazio.
On this day in 1984 - Former Inter midfielder Sneijder was born
Wesley Sneijder is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Qatar Stars League team Al-Gharafa SC.
He was named UEFA midfielder of the season and one of the three best midfielders in the world for 2010 by FIFA.
Sneijder joined Real Madrid for €27 million in 2007, winning La Liga in his first season with the club and later being sold to Internazionale for €15 million. At Inter, he won Serie A, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and two Coppa Italia.
Sneijder was a regular player for the Dutch national team, making his debut in April 2003 at the age of 18, and representing his country at the 2006, 2010 (where the Netherlands were defeated 1–0 in the final) and 2014 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2004, 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Football Championships.
Individually, he was awarded the 2010 Bronze Boot, the 2010 Silver Ball, and included in the team of the tournament for Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup,
With 134 caps, he is the most capped Dutch player of all time. He announced his international retirement in March 2018. Because of his status as most capped player he was granted a farewell match played against Peru on 6 September 2018.
