On this day in 2015 - Barcelona become the first club in history to win two trebles with a 3-1 win over Juventus in Berlin

Barcelona claimed their third Champions League in six years and second treble in history as the brilliance of their attacking trident proved too much for the brave challenge of Juventus in Berlin's Olympic Stadium.

Ivan Rakitic opened the scoring early on for the Catalans before Alvaro Morata drew Juve level at the start of the second half. But parity didn't last long as Luis Suarez restored Barcelona's lead a little over 10 minutes later. Neymar then added a third in injury time to ensure European football's biggest prize would return to Spain for a second year running.

It was also Xavi's last game for the Catalan club while fellow midfielder Iniesta became the first Barca player to feature in four finals as he equalled Clarence Seedorf's record of having played on the winning side four times.

On this day in 2004 - Schweinsteiger and Podolski made their Germany National team's debut

Schweinsteiger and Podolski held their debut for Rudi Völler's Germany on 6 June 2004, at age of 20 and 19, respectively. The game was held in Kaiserslautern against Hungary.

In the whole international career Schweinsteiger played for the German national team from 2004 to 2016. He is Germany's fourth most-capped player of all time, having earned 121 caps and scored 24 goals, in a 12-year international career starting in 2004. He was selected in their squads for four European Championships and three World Cups, including their victory at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Following Philipp Lahm's international retirement on 2 September 2014, Schweinsteiger was named captain of the national team. He played his last match for Germany against Finland on 31 August 2016, after which he retired from international football.

Podolski was eligible to play for Germany and Poland. Podolski originally wanted to play for the Polish team but was rejected by then Polish coach Paweł Janas in 2003. Podolski enjoyed great success with the German national team, ultimately becoming a national hero. He was first capped by Germany in 2004 and has been part of the squad in all major tournaments since then, winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He is the third most-capped player in German history, with 130 caps, and the third-highest goalscorer in German history, having scored 49 times.

On 29 May 2013, Podolski scored the fastest goal in German national team history, after just nine seconds of the 4–2 friendly win over Ecuador. It was at that time the second fastest international goal in history, second only to San Marino's Davide Gualtieri's 8.3-second strike against England in 1993. Podolski retired from international football on 22 March 2017 after scoring the winner in a friendly against England.

On this day in 1969 - Real Madrid & AC Milan legend Fernando Redondo was born

Born in Adrogué, Buenos Aires Province, Redondo played his first game in the Primera División at only 16 for Argentinos Juniors, and remained five years with the team before moving abroad to Spain.

Redondo made his debut in La Liga with CD Tenerife, under the management of countryman Jorge Solari. During this period, Real Madrid twice lost the league title to arch-rivals FC Barcelona on the final day of the season, in matches against Tenerife who were managed by Jorge Valdano[3] and, when the coach was appointed at Real Madrid in the summer of 1994, the player also made the move for a fee of US$5 million.

The key years of Redondo's career were spent at Real Madrid, where he won two league championships and the UEFA Champions League in 1998 and 2000.

During his time in Madrid, Redondo earned the nickname El Principe ("The Prince").[7] In April 2013 he was named by daily newspaper Marca as a member of the "Best foreign eleven in Real Madrid's history",[8] and four years later was selected by its readers to the club's all-time XI;[9] during one full decade, he amassed Spanish top division totals of 268 games and 12 goals.

In 2000, Redondo transferred to Serie A club A.C. Milan in a controversial £11m move: he stated that he was not involved in transfer discussions and expressed his desire to stay at Madrid.

In response, a section of Real Madrid supporters gathered outside the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium protesting the transfer.[11] However, he suffered a serious knee injury in one of his first training sessions for his new team, and was unable to play for the next 2½ years; he suspended his £2.74m-a-year salary, and even tried to give back the house and car which the Milan board had given him.[12]In late 2004, at the age of 35, Redondo retired from professional football following another knee injury.

Redondo was a member of the Argentine national team in the 1990s, representing the nation in the 1994 World Cup, and also winning the 1992 King Fahd Cup and the 1993 Copa América.
