Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (June 2nd) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 1988, Sergio Aguero was born

Agüero moved to Manchester City in July 2011 for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £35 million.

On the last day of his debut season with the club, he scored a 94th-minute winner against Queens Park Rangers that earned City its first league title in 44 years.

He also holds the joint-record for the most goals scored in a single Premier League match – five – and the fastest to do so, in 23 minutes and 34 seconds of match time.

Agüero is currently the 6th highest goalscorer in Premier League history, and the highest non-European scorer in the history of the Premier League, with over 160 goals in the division.

On this day in 1978, Madrid legend Santiago Bernabéu passed away

He is generally considered the one to whom much of the credit can be given for transforming Real Madrid into the most successful football club in Spain and in Europe. The team's current stadium is named in his honour. He was the club's President for 35 years, between September 1943 and June 1978.

At the time of his death, Bernabéu had been the club's president for 35 years, during which his club won 1 Intercontinental Cup, 6 European Cups, 16 League titles, 6 Spanish Cups, 2 Latin Cups and 1 Copa Eva Duarte. He died in 1978, while the World Cup was being played in Argentina. In his honour FIFA decreed three days of mourning during the tournament.

On this day in 1971, Ajax won their first UCL trophy

Playing before a crowd of 83,179 at Wembley, Ajax proved too strong for the Greeks, taking a quick 5th-minute lead with a goal from forward Dick van Dijk. The only other goal came in the 87th minute from Ajax midfielder and second-half substitute Arie Haan. But the day was really won by the Ajax defense, who managed to completely shut down the tournament's top scorer, forward Antonis Antoniadis. The striker had tallied 10 goals in the run up to the Final, four more than his closest rivals.

On this day in 1985, UEFA banned English clubs from participating in European competitions

UEFA enacted the ban in response to the Heysel Stadium disaster four days prior. On 29 May, at the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus at Heysel Stadium in Brussels, some Liverpool supporters breached a wall separating them from the Juventus supporters and charged at them. The Juventus fans retreated against a retaining wall, which collapsed, injuring approximately 600 people. 39 people died from their injuries.

On this day in 1980. USWNT legend Abby Wambach was born

Regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, Wambach is known in particular for her goalscoring ability and is the most prolific player in international competitions in soccer history.

In her international career, Wambach scored 184 goals in 256 international matches. She is currently the leading all-time international scorer for men and women.
