Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (May 30th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 2015 - Messi scored an outrageous solo goal as Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao to win the Copa del Rey

Messi was magnificent and scored twice in the 2015 Copa del Rey final, the first after 20 minutes the goal that set up this victory and one that even he will surely consider extraordinary. A moment before, he had confronted Mikel Balenziaga, who had been pulling at his shirt. Now, revenge was exacted. He confronted the defender again, with the ball this time. Messi received possession on the right touchline, rolled the ball under his foot and set off. Balenziaga and Beñat Etxebarria were left behind, Balenziaga twice. Mikel Rico was next, then Ameyric Laporte. Cutting into the area, Messi hit the ball hard and low into the net at the near post.

On this day in 1984 - Liverpool beat Roma on penalties to win their fourth European Cup

It was the final match of the 1983–84 season of Europe's premier cup competition, the European Cup. Liverpool were appearing in their fourth final, having won the competition in 1977, 1978 and 1981. Roma were appearing in their first European Cup final. As the final was held at Roma's home ground they went into the match as favourites, despite Liverpool's previous record in the competition. Watched by a crowd of 69,693, Liverpool took the lead in the first half when Phil Neal scored, but Roma equalised before half-time through Roberto Pruzzo. With the scores level at 1–1 through full-time and extra-time, the match went to a penalty shoot-out. Liverpool won the shoot-out 4–2 to claim their fourth European Cup.

On this day in 1957 - Real Madrid won their second consecutive European Cup

Real Madrid were the defending champions while the Viola earned the right to participate in the tournament by winning their first Serie A title the previous season. That season heralded a rise in Fiorentina's fortunes that saw them finish in Italy's top two for the next four years.

Playing before a partisan crowd of 124,000 at Madrid's home ground, the Bernabéu, Fiorentina managed to keep the match close. Unlike the previous final, which Madrid won 4-3 over Stade de Reims, the 1957 Final was a defensive battle, with both sides struggling to create scoring chances. Madrid eventually caught a break when the referee awarded a 69th-minute penalty kick that midfielder Alfredo di Stéfano converted with ease. Six minutes later, forward Francisco Gento scored on a breakaway, chipping the ball over Fiorentina keeper Giuliano Sarti.

On this day in 1979 - Nottingham Forest won their first European trophy

Nottingham Forest won their first European trophy, beating Malmö FF in the European Cup Final before a crowd of 57,000 at the Olympiastadion in Munich. It was an incredible accomplishment for Forest, who became only the third English side - after Manchester United and Liverpool - to claim Europe's biggest prize.
