Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (May 27th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 2009 - Barca beat Man Utd 2-0 to win their 1st treble

United started the final, played in stifling heat, as if retaining their crown would be little more than a formality, creating a host of early chances against the nervous-looking Catalans, with Cristiano Ronaldo a constant threat.

But once Samuel Eto'o scored at Edwin van der Sar's near post in the 10th minute after escaping Nemanja Vidic, the credits were rolling on their bid to add the Champions League to the Premier League.

Barcelona's peerless midfield pair of Andres Iniesta and Xavi ruled midfield with a display of passing perfection, starving United of further opportunities to strike at a defence weakened by injuries and suspension.

Xavi was the creator with a cross that looked too high for Messi, but he expertly soared to send a header over Van der Sar.

And this match initiated the 9-year direct battle between Messi and Ronaldo as the Portuguese joined Real Madrid that summer.

On this day in 2016 - Mourinho became manager of Man Utd

On 27 May 2016, Mourinho signed a three-year contract with Manchester United, with an option to stay at the club until at least 2020.

On 7 August 2016, Mourinho won his first trophy, the FA Community Shield, beating reigning Premier League champions Leicester City 2–1.

Manchester United won the Europa League courtesy of a 2–0 win over AFC Ajax in May of 2017, This was Mourinho's second major trophy of his first season as Manchester United manager. It also maintained his 100% record of winning every major European Cup final as a manager.

But his second year at Man Utd was not that smooth, after starting the 2018–19 season with just seven wins in the first 17 Premier League games, leaving Manchester United 19 points behind the league leaders, Mourinho was sacked by the club on 18 December 2018.

On this day in 2014 - Pochettino was appointed as Tottenham manager

On 27 May 2014, Pochettino was appointed head coach of Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract, becoming their tenth manager over a 12-year span.

In the domestic league, his first season was generally successful, ending in a fifth-placed finish and the conversion of several young academy players into regular first-team players.

On 24 May 2018, Pochettino signed a new five-year contract to keep him at Tottenham until 2023.

On 8 May 2019, Pochettino led Tottenham into the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final, the first Champions League/European Cup final in the club's history after beating Ajax on away goals (3–3 agg), with his side coming back from a 2–0 deficit (3–0 agg) at half-time in Amsterdam, only for Lucas Moura to score a second-half hat trick.

Can he lead these young team to create a new era for Tottenham?

On this day in 2001 - Torres made his debut at Atletico

Torres trained with the first team to get prepared for pre-season in 2000/2001 season, but eventually made his debut on 27 May 2001.

In the 2003–04 season, his second in La Liga, Torres made further strides, scoring 19 league goals in 35 appearances, meaning he finished as the joint third-highest scorer in the league.

At age 19, Torres was named Atlético's captain.

In December of 2014, Torres returned to where his dream began after his travel with Liverpool, Chelsea and Milan.

On this day in 2017 - Arsenal defeated Chelsea to win FA Cup

Despite what was expected to be a tight affair, Arsenal dominated the early proceedings and opened the scoring with a goal from Alexis Sánchez in the 4th minute, shooting past the advancing goalkeeper from six yards out with his right foot.

The goal was initially flagged as offside due to Aaron Ramsey being in an offside position. After discussing with his linesman, referee Anthony Taylor overrode the decision and awarded Arsenal the goal due to Ramsey not attempting to play the ball.

Sánchez also handled the ball in the lead up to the goal but this was not seen by the referee. Arsenal then hit the post twice from close range in the first half through Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck.

In the second half, Victor Moses received a second yellow card for diving in the penalty box in the 68th minute, leaving Chelsea with ten men.

Chelsea equalised through Diego Costa in the 76th minute when he controlled the ball on his chest in the penalty area before shooting low to the left with his right foot.

Three minutes later Aaron Ramsey scored for Arsenal by heading in an Olivier Giroud cross from the left from six yards out.
