On this day in 1988 - Real Madrid captain Marcelo was born

In 2015, Marcelo joined Real Madrid for $8 million fee. There, he established himself as a Real Madrid legend and won 20 trophies including four UEFA Champions Leagues, being elected to the Squad of the Season three times, as well as four La Liga titles.

He has been named to the FIFPro World XI five times, the UEFA Team of the Year three times and La Liga's Team of the Season in 2016.

Marcelo debuted for Brazil in 2006 against Wales, scoring a goal. He was called up for the 2008 Olympic squad, where he won a bronze medal. Four years later, he was part of Brazil's 2012 Olympic team, as one of the three over-age players, where Brazil won a silver medal.

Marcelo was selected as a member of Brazil to play in the 2013 Confederations Cup and started all five matches, as Brazil won 3–0 against Spain in the final. He was part of Brazil's squad in the 2014 FIFA World Cup which was his first World Cup. Brazil reached the semi-finals and he was named to the tournament's Dream Team.

In May 2018, he was named in the final squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup where he once again was named to the tournament's Dream Team.

On this day in 1997 - Barcelona new signing De Jong was born

Born in Gorinchem, De Jong began his professional career at Willem II in 2015, but transferred to Ajax for a fee of €1 a year later. In the Dutch capital, starring as a defensive midfielder, he established himself as one of the best young players in Europe.

In the Champions League, De Jong and Ajax team-mates surprise the whole world after they reached into the semi-final as a dark horse. They nearly get into the final but Tottenham's Lucas Moura knocks them out in the last minute.

In July 2019, he is due to transfer to Barcelona, having agreed to signing for them in a deal worth an initial €75m fee.

In 2018, de Jong made his senior international debut for the Netherlands.

On this day in 2013 - Sir Alex Ferguson bid farewell to Old Trafford

Sir Alex Ferguson took charge of Manchester United at Old Trafford for the very last time, a 2-1 win over Swansea before collecting the club's 20th Premier League title.

Paul Scholes played his last game at Old Trafford, Chicharito and Ferdinande were on the scoresheet.

On this day in 2017 - Chelsea secured the Premier League title

Chelsea secured the Premier League title at the Hawthorns against West Brom as Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to net the only goal of the game.

It looked as though Antonio Conte's side might be forced to delay their celebrations as they were frustrated for long periods by the resilience and organisation of their hosts.

But the mood changed and the title was won with eight minutes left as substitute Batshuayi, who had previously endured a season of struggle after his £33m move from Marseille, ended a scrappy passage of play by steering a finish high past Ben Foster.

The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among Chelsea's fans, and manager Conte was tossed high into the air by his squad.

On this day in 2013 - Watford won dramatic play-off semi-final vs Leicester

Troy Deeney scored Watford's aggregate winner in an extraordinary finish to their Championship play-off semi-final against Leicester.

Twenty seconds after Anthony Knockaert had a debatable penalty saved at the other end, Deeney thumped in a shot.

David Nugent headed in to restore Leicester's lead and, after another Vydra strike, Deeney netted the winner.
