Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (May 10th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 1969 - Football artist Dennis Bergkamp was born

There have been many great players over the years for the Arsenal. Dennis Bergkamp is one of those who has secured a top spot in the club's pantheon. The man was an artist with the football and among his goals were there many masterpieces.

The son of an electrician, Bergkamp was born in Amsterdam and played as an amateur in the lower leagues. He was spotted by Ajax at age 11 and made his professional debut in 1986. Good form led to an international call-up with the Netherlands a year later, attracting the attention of several European clubs. Bergkamp signed for Italian club Inter Milan in 1993, where he had two disappointing seasons. After joining Arsenal in 1995, he rejuvenated his career, helping the club to win three Premier League titles, four FA Cup trophies, and reach the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final, which marked his last appearance as a player. With the Netherlands national team, Bergkamp surpassed Faas Wilkes's record to become the country's top goalscorer of all time in 1998, a record later eclipsed by Patrick Kluivert, Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, Bergkamp finished third twice in the FIFA World Player of the Year award and was selected by Pelé as one of the FIFA 100 greatest living players. In 2007, he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, the first and so far only Dutch player ever to receive such honour. Due to his fear of flying, Bergkamp has been affectionately nicknamed the "Non-Flying Dutchman" by Arsenal supporters. In 2017, Bergkamp's famous goal against Newcastle United was voted as the best Premier League goal of all-time in the league's 25-year history.

On this day in 2009 - Chelsea ended Arsenal's unbeaten PL run of 21 games

Chelsea secured a top three Premier League finish and entried into next season's Champions League group stages with a comprehensive 4-1 win at Arsenal.

Alex powerfully headed Chelsea in front and Nicolas Anelka thundered in a 25-yard strike to double Chelsea's lead.

Arsenal's Kolo Toure put Ashley Cole's cross into his own net before a Nicklas Bendtner header pulled it back to 3-1.

The Gunners rallied but Chelsea wrapped up the win when Florent Malouda slotted in after Anelka's shot hit the post.

Arsenal were left to negotiate an open draw qualification for next season's Champions League, which could potentially pit them against a team from the German, Spanish or Italian leagues.

On this day in 1978 - Liverpool won its second consecutive European Cup Final

Liverpool won its second consecutive European Cup Final, beating Brugge 1-0 at Wembley Stadium before a crowd of 92,000.

With a bye in the first round, Liverpool started their title defense in the second round with 6-3 aggregate victory over East German side Dynamo Dresden. They then defeated Benfica 6-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals and beat Borussia Mönchenglagbach by the aggregate score of 4-2 in the semifinals.

The only goal in the Final was scored by Liverpool's Scottish forward Kenny Dalglish, whom they had just purchased earlier that season from Celtic for a transfer fee of £440,000. He went on the score 169 goals for the Reds in 501 appearances in all competitions, winning a multitude of honors including six League titles, two more European Cup trophies and one F.A. Cup trophy.

On this day in 2007 - The Red Devils roll a Lucky Seven

Manchester United staged a dramatic Champions League quarterfinal turnaround, overcoming a 2-1 first leg deficit by beating Roma 7-1 in the second leg and advancing 8-3 on aggregate.

The Italians entered the match at Old Trafford brimming with confidence. They had dominated United for most of the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico in a match that ended 2-1.

United, however, quickly dispelled any notions that they were going to roll over in the second leg, as midfielder Michael Carrick and forwards Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney scored three early first-half goals in quick succession (Carrick 12', Smith 17', Rooney 19'). Stunned, Roma pushed forward in attack, only to leave their defence exposed. Cristiano Ronaldo took advantage of the space, scoring goals on either side of the break (44', 49') to push the lead to 5-0.

Carrick completed his brace with a 60th-minute rocket to make it 6-0 before Roma finally drew blood with a 69th-minute shot from Daniele de Rossi. Roma's humiliation was complete in the 81st minute, as United back Patrice Evra knocked a low shot past keeper Doni to complete the final scoreline of 7-1.

On this day in 1986 - Liverpool completed Double by beating Everton in FA Cup Final, 3-1

The Reds had already beaten their Merseyside neighbors to the league title one week earlier, finishing the season with eleven wins and a draw in their last twelve matches to claim their sixteenth title in club history. Their last match was a 1-0 win over Chelsea that pushed them two points clear of runners-up Everton in the final table.

The Toffees were looking for redemption in the FA Cup Final, played before a crowd of 98,000 at Wembley. And an early goal from forward Gary Lineker put them on the right track, sending them up 1-0 in the 27th minute. Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobbelaar parried Lineker's first attempt, but knocked it back into the path of the striker, who converted with a follow-up shot.

Then Liverpool took over in the second half. Forward Ian Rush beat Everton keeper Bobby Mimms to provide the 56th-minute equalizer, followed six minutes later by the go-ahead goal from midfielder Craig Johnston. Rush then sealed the win with a second goal of the day, a low angled shot from six yards out in the 83rd minute.

On this day in 1988 - Reds midfielder Lallana was born

Lallana is an English professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Premier League club Liverpool and the England national team.

Lallana began his youth career with Bournemouth before transferring to Southampton in 2000, where he developed in their academy and became a professional in 2006. After a brief loan back to Bournemouth he broke into Southampton's first team as they earned two promotions from League One to the Premier League, becoming captain in 2012.

After two seasons in the top flight and an international breakthrough, he joined Liverpool for a reported £25 million in July 2014. He has won the champions league runner-up and the Europa League runner-up with Liverpool.

Since his senior international debut in 2013, Lallana has made over 30 appearances for England and represented them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016.

On this day in 1987 - Napoli won the Scudetto for the very first time

Napoli are Italian football giants and without doubt the most successful football club to originate from Southern Italy. Napoli have a long and rich history, which starts way back in 1904 to the 80’s and 90’s when it played host to one of the most brilliant footballers ever, Diego Maradona.

It was on May 10 1987 when a deathly quiet descended over Naples. The streets were basically empty, prompting Amalia Sgnorelli, an Italian anthropologist, to write: “The world hand changed. The most chaotic, noisiest and most crowded city in the whole of Europe was deserted.”

Napoli were on the verge of making history. A first Serie A title was beckoning. They secured it with a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina. The city of Naples erupted. Exultant Napoli fans thronged the streets. They partied for days as fans danced on the rooftops. There were fireworks as cars buildings and cars were all draped in the team’s colors, sky blue.

At the heart of all the celebration, one man stood out: Diego Armando Maradona. The diminutive Argentine had been pivotal in the success, and he would guide the club to another title in 1990 and European success. Napoli wasn't, however, not just one man. The Brazilian forward Careca had joined the team the previous season. Together with Maradona and Bruno Giordano they formed the attacking front called Ma-Gi-Ca.
