On this day in 2018 - Juventus won their 13th Coppa Italia in a 4-0 win over Milan

On 9 May 2018, Juventus won their fourth consecutive Coppa Italia, 13 times in total, as they thrashed AC Milan in the final at Stadio Olimpico.

Centre-back Medhi Benatia scored twice for Juve, heading in the opener in the 56th minute from Paulo Dybala's cross. Milan's 19-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was at fault as he fumbled in Douglas Costa's second and then spilled Mario Mandzukic's header for Benatia to poke home. Nikola Kalinic then headed Miralem Pjanic's corner past his own keeper.

Massimiliano Allegri's side did not concede a single goal in this season's cup run, with Gianluigi Buffon making his first appearance in a Coppa Italia final since 1999.

On this day in 2010 - Chelsea 8-0 Wigan to win their 4th EPL title

On 9 May 2010, a record win over Wigan (8-0) lifted Chelsea to their fourth league title and sent them on the way to their first Double.

It was the last day of the Premier League season and Chelsea were at the top of the table, but they had only a one-point lead over Manchester United, who had won the league for the last three seasons. Needing a win to secure the title, they were hosting Wigan at Stamford Bridge while United were playing Stoke City at Old Trafford.

Finally, thanks to Drogba hat-trick & Anelka double, Chelsea won the game with a 8-0. It was Chelsea's biggest margin of victory in a league game (later matched against Aston Villa in 2012) and also helped set the Premier League record for most goals in a season at 103, beating the previous record of 97 set by Manchester United in 1999-2000.

Chelsea went on to complete the Double that year, beating Portsmouth in the FA Cup Final on 15 May.

On this day in 2001 - The Accra Sports Stadium Disaster

On 9 May 2001, 126 football fans died at the Accra Sports Stadium, making it Africa's worst ever sports-related disaster. It was one of several such incidents in Africa over a period of less than a month, including similar disasters in South Africa (43 killed on 11 April), the Congo (14 killed on 29 April), and the Ivory Coast (39 killed on 6 May).

The fans were in Accra that night to watch a derby match between hosts Hearts of Oak and fellow Accra club Asante Kotoko. The visitors were up 1-0 near the end of the match, but Hearts of Oak scored two late goals to take the lead. With about five minutes left, frustrated Asante Kotoko supporters began ripping seats out of the stands and throwing them onto the pitch. The police responded by firing tear gas into the crowd, causing a panic. Most of the victims were crushed in the ensuing stampede, while a few died from suffocation.

Although six policemen were charged with manslaughter, authorities later determined that the tragedy was compounded by the fact that several stadium gates were locked at the time, preventing the crowd from escaping.

The Ghanian government established a special scholarship for children of the victims and also erected a memorial statue at the stadium, which has since been renamed Ohene Djan Stadium.

On this day in 2018 - Yaya Toure's last game for Man City

Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure played his last game for the club in a 3-1 victory at home to Brighton.

In Yaya Toure's final game as a City player, goals from Danilo, Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho ensured Guardiola's team surpassed the 95-point tally set by Chelsea under Jose Mourinho in 2004-05.

On 2 July 2010, Touré signed a five-year deal with Premier League club Manchester City for a fee of around £24 million. On 28 July, Touré made his debut for City in a pre-season friendly against Club América, which City won 4–1 on penalties after a 1–1 draw with the Mexican side. In his home debut on 7 August, in a friendly against Valencia, he was named man of the match. He also helped City earn their first league title in 44 years.

On this day in 1964 - Cologne became 1st champion of Bundesliga

The newly formed league was founded partly out of concern at the country's football federation that it was falling behind internationally after being knocked out of the 1962 FIFA World Cup in the quarter-finals by Yugoslavia.

Sixteen teams were selected from the various regional leagues across the country, with their on-field success and economic criteria taken into account. Crucially, only one team per city was admitted initially, and as 1860 Munich were the top dogs in Bavaria at the time, Bayern were forced to wait.

On 9 May 1964, Cologne won the inaugural Bundesliga season with a record of 17 victories, 11 draws and two defeats, scoring 78 goals and conceding 40, to give them a total of 45 points.

That would equate to 62 in the modern era, a pleasant and timely coincidence given that Cologne have just won the Bundesliga 2 title – you guessed, with 62 points – to return to the top flight next season.

On this day in 2013 - David Moyes signed a six-year deal with Man Utd

On 9 May 2013, Manchester United announced that Moyes would take over the club following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement as manager. He signed a six-year contract with the club, and officially took up his managerial position at United on 1 July 2013.

On 22 April 2014, United announced that they had sacked Moyes. Moyes was in charge of United for 10 months, the third-shortest managerial stint in United history and the shortest in 82 years. At the time of his sacking, United were seventh in the Premier League table, 13 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with four matches remaining, ensuring United would fail to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1995 and finish outside of the top three for the first time in Premier League history.

He was replaced in the interim by long-serving player Ryan Giggs and permanently by Louis van Gaal. Moyes was awarded £5 million in compensation following the sacking.

On this day in 2013 - Arsenal announce a kit deal with Puma

However, Puma's deal with Arsenal will come to the end this season, and Adidas becomes Gunners new kit sponsor from next season.

On this day in 1987 - Kevin Gameiro was born

On this day in 1998 -Celtic Ends Their Title Drought

On 9 May 1998, Celtic defeated St. Johnstone 2-0 on the last day of the Scottish Premier Division Season to secure their first league title in ten years.

The title race went down to the wire, with Celtic starting the day only two points ahead of Old Firm rivals Rangers, who were playing at Dundee United. Celtic striker Henrik Larsson put his team ahead in the third minute. In 2nd half, Celtic substitute Harald Brattbakk sealed the win for the hosts with a 72nd-minute strike to put Celtic up 2-0. The day finished as it had started, with Celtic two points clear of Rangers, giving Celtic their first title since 1988.
