Real Betis and Espanyol bid farewell to European hopes after turbulent draw

Real Betis and Espanyol shared a 1-1 draw on Monday night at the Estadio Benito Villamarin which all but ends each side's hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Espanyol went into the game having lost 23 points from winning positions and they would add another two to that unfortunate tally in dramatic circumstances.

Sergi Darder put the visitors ahead on 37 minutes to give Espanyol a deserved lead going into the break.

From then on, Los Pericos should have put the game to bed when Marc Roca headed towards goal only for Joel Robles to make a great save.

Borja Iglesias then had a goal ruled out by VAR from offside, for which there could be no dispute.

Espanyol would live to regret their squandered chances as, with one of the final kicks of the game, Zouhair Feddal levelled the score on 94 minutes to see both sides go home with a point.

The result leaves both sides with almost no hopes of finishing in the European places, as they each lie six points off Athletic Club who occupy the final continental position with three games to go.
