Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (April 26th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 2008, Modric agreed to join Tottenham from Dinamo Zagreb

Tottenham won the race to sign highly-rated Croatian midfielder Luka Modric.

He got number 14 jersey, later recalling that wore it in honour of Johan Cruyff. Modric made his competitive Premier League debut on 16 August in a 2–1 defeat to Middlesbrough in Spurs' first match of the 2008–09 season.

Almost 10 years on the signing of Modric remains one of Spurs’ best of the Levy era. They paid £16.5million for him, got four brilliant seasons out of him and then sold him for £30m to Real Madrid in 2012.

The midfielder capped an incredible year by winning the Ballon d'Or award, having helped Real Madrid win a third consecutive Champions League in addition to being the heartbeat of a Croatia side that reached the World Cup final where he was crowned the best player.

On this day in 1903, Atletico Madrid was founded

Atletico Madrid is one of the biggest Spanish football clubs even that its existence most of the time have been foreshadowed by the giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The club was founded in 1903, under the name of Athletic Club de Madrid. Its founders, three Basque students living in Madrid, considered the club a youth branch of Athletic Bilbao. The club first shirts with blue and white shirts were probably inspired by Blackburn Rovers. Eight years later they would change to red and white shirt and this time by the influence of Southampton. The heritage from the first kit lives on with the blue shorts.

Diego Simeone's appointment as head coach in 2011 saw the club return to its former paths of glory without really big stars, but with the idea of collectivism. Under his leadership, the club won a Europa League in 2012, and followed it up with a Copa del Rey in 2013 and its tenth La Liga in 2014. After the team's victory in the UEFA Super Cup 2018, Simeone became the most successful manager in the club's history.

The club's missing trophy is that of the Champions League. Athlético has been close to win it, being runners-up in 2013–14 and 2015–16 plus reaching the semi-finals in 2016–17.

On this day in 2015, Déjà vu for Everton, the Toffees stunned Man Utd 3-0

Manchester United missed the chance to move 10 points clear of Liverpool after they became the latest victims of Everton's late-season revival.

United could have increased the gap to their fifth-placed rivals in the race for Champions League places with a win.

But James McCarthy's counter-attacking goal and John Stones' header had Everton 2-0 ahead at half-time.

Kevin Mirallas beat the offside trap with 16 minutes left to clinch a fifth win in six league games for the hosts.

On this day in 1991, the 'Hand Of God' got caught in the cookie jar

Police in Buenos Aires arrested Maradona for possession of cocaine. It was one more twist in the spiralling descent of the Argentina star, who had just started serving a 15-month ban from Italian football.

Although he was already suffering from a cocaine addiction when he joined Napoli in 1984, he reached his greatest potential while at the club, winning two Serie A titles (1987, 1990) and the UEFA Cup (1989). Meanwhile, he shined on the international stage for Argentina, guiding them to the 1986 World Cup trophy while winning the Golden Ball at the tournament's best player.

But in March 1991, the Italian Football Federation suspended Maradona for 15 months after he tested positive for cocaine. He returned to Buenos Aires, but could not escape his troubles. On the morning on 26 April, police roused him from bed at his apartment and arrested him for possession of cocaine.

Maradona's ongoing problems proved too much for Napoli, who transferred him to Sevilla in 1992 at the completion of his suspension. His troubles continued, however, including a dismissal from the 1994 World Cup after a positive test for ephedrine and another arrest for cocaine possession in 1997. The latter effectively ended his playing career.

On this day in 1902, Newton Heath changed their name to Manchester United

Nicknamed 'the Red Devils', the club was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.

Manchester United have won more trophies than any other club in English football, with a record 20 League titles, 12 FA Cups, 5 League Cups and a record 21 FA Community Shields. United have also won three UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA Europa League, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 1998–99, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the continental European treble. By winning the UEFA Europa League in 2016–17, they became one of five clubs to have won all three main UEFA club competitions.
