Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (April 20th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!

On this day in 2018, Wenger announced that he would be leaving Arsenal

Widely credited with revolutionizing English football, Arsene Wenger announced that he would leave his long-time role as Arsenal manager at the end of the season. It was the end of an era

The 68-year-old Frenchman has been at the north London club since 1996.

He is the longest-serving manager still in the English Premier League, but has been under pressure in recent years from a disgruntled section of fans.

"After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season," Wenger wrote in a statement on the Arsenal website.

"I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years. I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.

"I want to thank the staff, the players, the directors and the fans who make this club so special."

On this day in 2011, Cristiano header helped Madrid beat Barca to win the Copa del Rey

Real Madrid claimed their first trophy under José Mourinho when Cristiano Ronaldo's dramatic extra-time winner secured a 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey.

The match was a traditional 'El Clásico' rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid which took place at the Mestalla Stadium, making it the sixth such Copa del Rey final, just four days after the two teams played each other in La Liga and seven days before they played each other in the UEFA Champions League first leg semi-final.

The match was scoreless after 90 minutes but there had been numerous scoring chances on both sides. Ronaldo was credited with having three good chances in the first half, the last of which was kept out with a one-handed save by Barcelona goalkeeper Pinto. Barcelona did not have a shot on target in the first half, but in the second they dominated possession. The game was won in the first period of extra time by the game's only goal, a header from Cristiano Ronaldo from a cross from Ángel Di María.

On this day, Ramos dropped trophy under wheels of bus during victory parade

The defender somehow lost his grip on the King's Cup and watched it drop agonisingly down the front of the bus before slipping under the wheels as the coach driver ploughed on.

The trophy appeared to be flattened, although Ramos - a World Cup winner with Spain in South Africa - later claimed it was 'ok'.

Television pictures also appeared to show emergency services gathering up the broken pieces of the cup.

Tellingly, it was also absent from the traditional celebration spot of the Plaza de Cibeles in central Madrid.

The incident, which took place at around 4.15am local time, failed to derail celebrations which ended with the traditional crowning of the Cibeles statue.

On this day in 2010, Inter stunned tired Barca 3-1 in UCL semi-final clash

Inter Milan produced a fine first-leg display as they came from behind to beat holders Barcelona and take control of their Champions League semi-final.

Barca, following their arduous journey to Italy by bus, went ahead when Maxwell's left-wing cross found Pedro to slot in.

Inter levelled as Wesley Sneijder fired in right-footed from a Diego Milito pass and Milito then teed up Maicon to control and slam home to make it 2-1.

Milito nodded in after Sneijder miscued a header to put Inter firmly in charge.

The result gave Barca a mountain to climb in the second leg in Catalonia and finally they were knocked out of the Champions League with an aggregate 2-3.

On this day in 2014, Man Utd lost to Everton in Moyes final game as United manager

When the fixture list was released, Manchester United’s freshly appointed manager will have wondered where he might be when he once more paced Goodison’s familiar corridors. David Moyes cannot have imagined that at the climax of the most engrossing Premier League season in years he would have reduced the champions of England to a state of total irrelevance.

Tellingly, this was the first time that Everton had done the double over Manchester United since 1969-70.

Whatever Moyes’ failings as the helmsman of one of the biggest sporting institutions in the world, his players have let him down lamentably. Every one of them must have known how much this game meant to their manager and yet they turned in a performance that was beyond limp. This was their 11th defeat of the season and it was by a distance the worst. And two days later, Moyer was sacked.
