On this day in 2004 - Deportivo beat Milan 4-0 to complete a 5-4 agg win
Milan's team in 2004 was loaded with the world's best stars including Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Paolo Maldini, Cafu and Andriy Shevchenko. A 4-1 loss in the first leg surely spelt defeat for Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna. But, as Deportivo coach Javier Irureta said before the second leg in Spain, "Miracles often happen, things you might not rationally expect."
Away from home, the defending champion and tournament favourite Milan were erratic early on, eventually succumbing to Deportivo's immense pressure in the form of an early Walter Pandiani goal. As the Riazor crowd bellowed, a Juan Carlos Valeron header and a fierce drive from Albert Luque about a minute from halftime erased Milan's first leg lead and would send Deportivo through. But Irureta's side wasn't satisfied yet, as they added one more for good measure on a brilliant volley from Fran to give the Galicians an astonishing quarterfinal victory.
On this day in 1983 - Three-time French Player of the Year Ribery was born
Ribéry is a three-time winner of the French Player of the Year award and has also won the German Footballer of the Year becoming the first player to hold both honours. He has also been named to the UEFA Team of the Year and declared the Young Player of the Year in France. In 2013, Ribéry won the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.
He primarily plays as a winger, preferably on the left side although being right-footed, and is known for pace, energy, skill and precise passing. Ribéry is described as a player who is fast, tricky and an excellent dribbler, who has great control with the ball at his feet. Since joining Bayern, he has been recognised on the world stage as one of the best French players of his generation.
On this day in 2001 - Der Klassiker produced 14 yellow and 3 red cards
The match was part of a tight title race, Bayern were in first, just one point clear of second-place Dortmund, who would claim the top spot with a win in front of their home supporters.
Bayern, with forward Roque Santa Cruz putting them ahead with a 6' strike. Shortly afterward, the contest degenerated into a brutish display that held little resemblance to a match. Bayern were the main culprits, accumulating a total of six yellow cards before the break, including two for left back Lizarazu, who was ejected in the 35th minute.
With Bayern a man down, Dortmund equalized in the 52nd minute with a goal from striker Bobic. Just 3 minutes later, Bayern went down to nine men as midfielder and captain Effenberg received a straight red, but the hosts could not capitalize on their numerical advantage and the game ended 1-1. By that time, Dortmund had a player of their own sent off, with Evanilson receiving a straight red in the 90th minute.
On this day in 2018 - Man City 2-3 Man United: Pogba sparks stunning United fightback
City knew a win would be enough for their third Premier League title and goals from Kompany (25) and Gundogan (30) looked to have sealed the deal.
Guardiola then watched his team waste numerous chances with Sterling particularly culpable and Pogba, put the champagne on ice with a quick-fire double just after half-time (53, 55) before Chris Smalling (69) completed a miraculous comeback.
