Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (April 2nd) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!
On this day in 1995, Beckham made his Premier League debut
Beckham made his Barclays Premier League debut on 2 April, 1995 in a goalless draw with Leeds United but it was the following season that he established himself as a first-team regular on the right of midfield. He announced his arrival with an impudent goal from his own half against Wimbledon in August 1996 that was later voted the Premier League Goal of the Decade in the Premier League's 10 Seasons Awards.
On this day in 1927, Real Madrid legend Puskás was born
Puskas was an odd looking footballer. He was short, stocky, barrel-chested, overweight, couldn't head and only used one foot. Known as "The Galloping Major", a reference to the fact that he was an army officer playing for an army team, he had huge success in Hungarian football with Kispest Honved. He won four league championships with them before moving to Real Madrid. He would enjoy even more success in the Spanish capital. Partnering the great Alfredo di Stefano up front, they formed the most feared duo in international football.
For Hungary he played 84 times and scored a world record 83 goals! No player, not even Pelé, has scored that many goals for a national team.
On this day in 2005, Newcastle teammates Bowyer & Dyer sent off for fighting each other
It was an all-out humiliation for the hosts, who finished the match with only eight men thanks to three red cards, two of which were issued for a fight between Newcastle teammates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer.
After Barry's second penalty kick, Bowyer apparently took offense when Dyer did not pass him the ball and the two ended up in a full-bore brawl. Barry stepped in to separate the two, but both Bowyer and Dyer were sent off for violent conduct.
On this day in 1979, Former Wolfsburg striker Grafite was born
With Wolfsburg he signed a four-year contract, which he extended in 2009 until 2012. In his first season, he scored 11 times in 24 matches, and was also his team's top scorer. At the end of the following season the Felix Magath-managed Wolves were champions of Germany for the first time, and Grafite contributed with 28 goals in 25 matches, making him the league's top striker. Alongside his partner in the attack, Edin Džeko, who scored 26 goals, he formed the most prolific strike partnership in Bundesliga history, together totalling 54 goals.
Who remembers this ludicrous goal he scored against Bayern Munich?
