Welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (April 1st) in football history......

2017: Mane, Coutinho & Origi secured Liverpool's derby win over Everton

Philippe Coutinho scored a stunner at Anfield as Liverpool beat Everton 3-1 in the Merseyside derby to move third in the 2016/17 Premier League table.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring on eight minutes and Coutinho's brilliant finish restored the hosts' advantage after Matthew Pennington had levelled on his first start of the season.

Divock Origi, who replaced an injured Mane in the second half, made the points safe, moving Liverpool above Manchester City, who face Arsenal on Super Sunday, one of two games in hand they hold on Jurgen Klopp's side.

2006: Abou Diaby scored his first goal for Arsenal

After dealing with an injury in the month of March, - just two months after he joined Arsenal - Diaby returned to play in April scoring his first goal for the club in a 5–0 victory over Aston Villa on April Fools' Day 2006.

He was set up for the goal by fellow club newcomer Emmanuel Adebayor.

Diaby went on to score 19 goals in 180 appearances for the Gunners, before retiring in February this year, aged 32.

2001: A young Pirlo assisted an old Baggio to a wonderful goal

Two icons of Serie A past and future combine as Brescia's young Andrea Pirlo delivered a laser-guided ping from the half line.

It was met by Roberto Baggio with a fine control and the finish was not bad either. The game ended Juventus 1-1 Brescia as Gianluca Zambrotta opened the scoring for the Old Lady.

“When we played together, everything we did depended on him (Pirlo),” said Baggio. Fine words from perhaps Italy’s greatest ever No10.

1998: Del Piero the Champions League hat-trick hero for Juventus

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero scored a hat-trick in the semi-finals of Champions League as Zinedine Zidane was on the scoresheet as well.

He produced an inspirational performance, scoring a hat-trick and making the other, as Juve famously thrashed Monaco 4-1 to put one foot in the final.

1995: Nottingham Forest beat Sheffield Wednesday 7-1 away

It was one of the great away performances of the Premier League era as Nottingham Forest hit seven against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Ian Woan, Stuart Pearce, Lars Bohinen Stan Collymore and Bryan Roy scored for Forest while Mark Bright grabbed the only goal for Wednesday.

1970: Everton secured their 7th first division league title

This was the season when the School of Science reached its pinnacle and Everton reigned supreme in English football.

Harry Catterick's, side, containing the likes of Alan Ball, Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall, was never going to be accused of playing dull football and they started the marathon season with a devastating sprint that left Don Revie and Leeds settling for second from the start.

Wins against Liverpool (the only side to beat Everton at home earlier in the season) and Chelsea pushed Everton forward and a win against West Brom sealed the title, with Whittle and Harvey sealing a memorable win.
