Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (March 28th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!

On this day in 2009, Messi wore Argentina No.10 shirt for first time

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was given the No. 10 shirt for Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in what was Diego Maradona’s first competitive game in charge as the coach.

Although he has always maintained that he doesn’t care what number he wears, Messi could not hide his joy at the end of the game when Los Albicelestes capped off a perfect evening with a 4-0 win.

“I’m very happy that Diego give me the No. 10. I will give the two shirts that I used to my mother and my brother,” he told reporters immediately after the match.

On this day in 1993, Totti made his debut for Roma

It is a game that would otherwise be resigned to the vast archive of history, a regulation 2-0 away victory over Brescia in a season where Roma were heading inexorably for a forgettable mid-table finish.

Instead, coach Vujadin Boskov’s decision to call upon the 16-year-old sitting at the end of his substitutes bench, introducing him to the action for the final three minutes, ensured the game would always hold a special place in Roma history.

That 16-year-old was Francesco Totti, and Brescia’s Stadio Mario Rigamonti thus became the venue for the opening chapter in a career that would take the teenager to football's summit.

778 games and 307 goals (and counting) for the Giallorossi have followed, in 24 years of sustained excellence.

Hmm... Interesting right?

On this day in 2001, The Magnificent Manchester Seven

England beat Albania in a World Cup qualifier with almost half their team coming from one club--Manchester United.

Five members of the starting eleven--Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Andy Cole--were from Manchester United, the defending Premier League champions. Additionally, Red Devils Wes Brown and Teddy Sheringham entered as second-half substitutes, taking the club's total to seven.

The line-up worked against Albania, with both Scholes (86') and Cole (95') scoring in England's 1-3 win.
