AC Milan and Inter Milan could enter agreement to overhaul iconic stadium.

It seems the views of the Giuseppe Meazza may come to an end as AC Milan and Inter Milan are close to a partnership that will demolish the stadium that has been both team's home since 1947.

While AC Milan management has made the push for a new stadium, Inter has been a little more reluctant … until now.

Media reports suggest the Nerazzurri are now on board with a plan to tear down the iconic stadium — once considered one of the best in Europe.

While both teams may have reached an understanding, the final decision on what to do with the site will ultimately be made by the City of Milan.

The plan for a new stadium includes move the location near the current location in San Siro — which is another name the stadium is referred to.

The teams were slated to present plans to the city by the end of April, but Gazzetta suggests that presentation could happen as early as next week.

“Inter and Milan are working together. We still have work to do but the time is right. Soon we will inform the city of our shared choice,” said Inter Milan CEO Alessandro Antonello. “Milan needs a new stadium worthy of top European cities.”

The biggest issue with renovating the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza is that it would likely take longer and cost more money. It would also force both teams to play at other venues while the upgrades are taking place.

Building a new stadium would mean the teams could continue to play at the Meazza while the new stadium is being built.

The stadium, built in 1926, has already undergone several renovations over the years.

The plan may also include a 5,000-seat venue that could be used for concerts and other events, new sports and recreational facilities and shopping centers.

The price tag for a new stadium has been quoted at near €600 million with most of the construction costs being absorbed by AC Milan and Inter Milan. The stadium naming rights could bring in an estimated €25 million per year in revenue.

A new stadium would likely take between 3-5 years to complete, but Milan officials would like the new stadium ready for the 2022-23 season.

One big question concerns the ownership of a new stadium. Currently, the Giuseppe Meazza is owned and operated by the city. There has been no clear answer to whether the city would own a new stadium or whether it would be jointly owned by the teams.
