Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (March 6th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!

On this day in 1902 - FIFA Club of the 20th Century was founded

Founded on 6 March 1902 as the Madrid Football Club, the club has traditionally worn a white home kit since inception. The word real is Spanish for "royal" and was bestowed to the club by King Alfonso XIII in 1920 together with the royal crown in the emblem.

In domestic football, the club has won 64 trophies; a record 33 La Liga titles, 19 Copa del Rey, 10 Supercopa de España, a Copa Eva Duarte, and a Copa de la Liga. In European and worldwide competitions, the club has won a record 26 trophies; a record 13 European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Cups and four UEFA Super Cups. In international football, they have achieved a record seven club world championships.

Real Madrid was recognised as the FIFA Club of the 20th Century on 11 December 2000, and received the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit on 20 May 2004. The club was also awarded Best European Club of the 20th Century by the IFFHS on 11 May 2010. In June 2017, the team succeeded in becoming the first club to win back to back Champions Leagues, then made it three in a row in May 2018, extending their lead atop the UEFA club rankings.

But this year, it would not be a 'happy birthday'.

On this day in 2011 - Dirk Kuyt's hat-trick defeated Man Utd

The Dutchman – always a man for the big occasions during his time with the Reds – guided his team to a 3-1 victory over their fiercest rivals at Anfield with the treble.

With a little help from the genius of Luis Suarez, who had signed for the club five weeks previously, he struck twice in the first half and once more after the interval to emulate Peter Beardsley’s feat in 1990.

On this day in 2004 - Messi made his Barcelona B debut

On 6 March in 2004, Messi made his debut for Barcelona B in the Segunda División B, although he had already made his first team debut when he came on in the 75th minute during a friendly against José Mourinho's Porto on 16 November 2003.

And the rest is history.

Happy Birthday to them!

On this day in 1987 - Barca forward Kevin-Prince Boateng was born

A midfielder who can also play as a forward, Boateng is known for his strength, footspeed and ball-juggling tricks. A 2014 profile on FIFA's official website described Boateng as "blessed with strength, speed, killer instinct in front of goal, and an uncommon flamboyance in the attacking third."

Throughout his career, Boateng has represented various clubs in Germany and Italy, and also had spells in England and Spain.

Born in Germany, he represented Germany internationally at youth level, although at senior level he later represented Ghana 15 times between 2010 and 2014, scoring two goals, and took part at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups with the team.

On this day in 1988 - Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet was born

Mignolet started his career with Belgian Second Division side Sint-Truiden in 2004, and spent six years with the club, making 100 senior league appearances and scoring a goal. He moved to Premier League side Sunderland in June 2014 for £2 million, spending three years with them and making 101 appearances across all competitions before moving to Liverpool in June 2013 for £9 million.

Mignolet has represented the Belgium national team at every level from under-16 upwards. He made his senior debut in 2011, has since earned over 20 caps. He was also named to Belgium's squad for the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup.

On this day in 1996 - German striker Timo Werner was born

Upon making his senior debut in 2013, Werner became the youngest player ever to represent VfB Stuttgart and later became the club's youngest ever goalscorer. He made over 100 appearances for the club before joining RB Leipzig in 2016. He also holds the records for being the youngest player to reach 100 and 150 Bundesliga appearances, as well as being the youngest player to score two goals in a top-flight match in Germany.

A prolific goalscorer at youth international level, Werner made his senior debut for Germany in 2017. In the same year, he helped Germany claim the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup where his return of three goals earned him the tournament's Golden Boot award.
