Arsenal fans were left scratching their heads as to why they ever let Serge Gnabry leave after he penned a new four-year deal with Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The German midfielder broke through into the first team at the Emirates Stadium under Arsene Wenger but struggled to secure regular minutes and was allowed to leave in 2016 without much resistance.

Having revived his career with German champions Bayern, the club have secured his long-term future and Arsenal fans have questioned why one of Europe's brightest young talents was allowed to leave so easily.

One disgruntled fan wrote: 'Honestly no other player we've lost hurts like gnabry @Arsenal literally made no sense why let him go. I'm pretty sure he wasn't even trying to leave we didn't want him!?'

Competition for places was tough in those wide attacking roles during Gnabry's time in north London but one fan still feels he would get in over Alex Iwobi, who is a regular starter in the current side.

He wrote:  'Still remember Wenger not deeming Gnabry good enough for Arsenal, he gets in over Iwobi everyday of the week.'

Despite a tough season under boss Niko Kovac, Bayern have seen Gnabry emerge as a key player for them in recent months.

Only star striker Robert Lewandowski has scored more goals for the club in all competitions for Bayern this season than Gnabry, who has eight compared to the Polish forward's 27.

Gnabry spent five years at Arsenal before being allowed to depart for a cut price of around £4million as he joined Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Injuries were an issue during his time at Arsenal but many have now been left to rue the club's short-term vision for a player who is impressing at Champions League level.

While some voiced their frustrations about Gnabry's departure two-and-a-half years ago, others simply turned to hilarious GIFs.

One of former manager Wenger struggling to zip up his iconic long coat was used to highlight the error the club made in losing the 23-year-old.
