On This Day: Griezmann made his France debut; Torres netted brilliant hat-trick

On this day in 2014, Griezmann made his France debut

On 27 February 2014, Griezmann received a call-up to France's senior squad by coach Didier Deschamps to play in a friendly against the Netherlands at the Stade de France. He earned his first cap on 5 March, appearing as a starter in the 2–0 home win and playing the first 68 minutes.

On this day in 2008, Torres netted brilliant hat-trick

Fernando Torres scored his second Anfield hat-trick in less than two weeks as Liverpool thrashed West Ham United 4-0 to go fourth in the Premier League.

Reds were rewarded with the opening goal by Torres after eight minutes when he turned in a low cross from Dirk Kuyt.

West Ham fought their way back into the game, albeit without ever looking too dangerous, until the same duo combined for the second after 61 minutes, this time Torres heading home the Dutchman's cross.

Torres was close to his hat-trick soon after when he struck the woodwork with a diving header but completed the treble in the 81st minute with a calm finish.

On this day in 1993, Man Utd star Fred was born

On 5 June 2018, Premier League club Manchester United reached an agreement to sign Fred. He was officially introduced on the club's website 16 days later. He agreed a five-year contract with the option to extend for a further year. On 11 August, he made his club debut in a 2–1 victory over Leicester City in their first league game of the season.

Comfortable receiving the ball in confined midfield crawlspace, Fred's superb first touch off either foot allows him to quickly bypass opposition harassment and launch attacks.

While he is capable of launching accurate long balls, carrying the team forward with the ball at his feet is where he is particularly effective. He is also dangerous when shooting from distance.

On this day in 1993, Harry Maguire was born

Born in Sheffield, Maguire came through the youth system at Sheffield United before graduating to the first team in 2011. He totalled 166 professional games for the Blades and was their Player of the Year three consecutive times, also featuring in the PFA Team of the Year for League One as many times. In 2014, he transferred to Hull City for £2.5 million, who loaned him to Wigan Athletic in 2015. He joined Leicester City in 2017 for a potential £17 million fee.

Maguire was named in the 23-man England national team squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He assisted Harry Kane's winner against Tunisia on 18 June 2018 in England's World Cup opener. England won 2–1. Maguire scored his first England goal on 7 July 2018 with a 30th-minute header from Ashley Young's cross in a 2–0 win over Sweden in the quarter-final.
