Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (March 3rd) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!

On this day in 2018, Ronaldo became the fastest player to score 300 goals in La Liga history

On 3 March 2018, he scored two goals in a 3–1 home win over Getafe, his first being his 300th La Liga goal in his 286th La Liga appearance, making him the fastest player to reach this landmark and only the second player to do so after Lionel Messi.

On this day in 1953, Brazil legend Zico was born

Zico is a Brazilian coach and footballer, who played as an attacking midfielder. Often called the "White Pelé"

Zico was a creative playmaker, with excellent technical skills, vision, and an eye for goal, who is considered one of the most clinical finishers and best passers ever, as well as one of the greatest players of all time. Arguably the world's best player of the late 1970s and early 80s, he is regarded as one of the best playmakers and free kick specialists in history, able to bend the ball in all directions. According to Pelé, considered one of the best players ever, "throughout the years, the one player that came closest to me was Zico"

On this day in 1973, Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Future Liverpool captain Emlyn Hughes celebrates scoring the first of two late goals in front of a 54,269 capacity crowd at Goodison Park, as Kevin Keegan prepares to congratulate him.

Hughes had rounded Everton goalkeeper David Lawson to open the scoring 10 minutes from time and would add a second eight minutes later as Bill Shankly's side stayed top of the league.

After scoring goals in a memorable win over Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison Park, Hughes was made Liverpool captain after Tommy Smith had a publicised falling-out with Shankly, who nonetheless kept him in the team. Smith and Hughes' relationship soured as a consequence, although it never visibly affected their football.

On this day in 1946, Barca beat Madrid 1-0

César scores as Barça beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Les Corts.

César returned to Barcelona in 1942, winning his first national championship in 1944–45, to which conquest he contributed with 15 goals in 24 matches. During his 13-year stint in Catalonia he scored in double digits in 11 seasons, surpassing the 20-goal mark in three.

On this day in 2011, Madrid welcomed Pellegrini back to the Bernabeu by crushing his new team 7-0

In November 2010, Pellegrini signed a three-year deal to manage Málaga. They had already lost to Real Madrid in the league the previous month, so the game in March was his first time facing his former employers.

It was a rout. Two of Pellegrini's signings scored a total of five goals (three from Ronaldo and two from Benzema), while Ángel di María and Marcelo added goals of their own to stretch the margin to 7-0. When the final whistle blew, Málaga were down to nine men, with one ejected and one injured after Pellegrini had made all three substitutions.
