On This Day: Happy 90th birthday to LaLiga; Zidane scored his FIRST goal

On this day in 1929 - LaLiga began

In April 1927, Jose Maria Acha, a director at Arenas Club de Getxo, first proposed the idea of a national league in Spain. After much debate about the size of the league and who would take part, the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol eventually agreed on the ten teams who would form the first Primera Division in 1929. 

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Arenas Club de Getxo and Real Union were all selected as previous winners of the Copa del Rey. Atletico Madrid, Espanyol and Europa qualified as Copa del Rey runners-up and Racing de Santander qualified through a knockout competition. Only three of the founding clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, have never been relegated from the Primera Division.

On this day in 1986 - Monaco forward Falcao was born

Falcao captains both Monaco and the Colombia national team. He is nicknamed "El Tigre" (Spanish for The Tiger).

Falcao made 90 appearances for River Plate and scored 34 times in his career with the Argentine club before leaving to Porto in 2009.

Falcao was signed by Spanish club Atletico Madrid on 18 August 2011 for a hefty price of 40 million euros. He immediately made an impact with his talent in the spanish league scoring 36 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions.

He helped the team to win Europa League and became the first player ever to win the trophy with two different teams in succession.

The 2012-13 season started with a bang as Falcao won the UEFA Super Cup scoring a hat-trick against Chelsea and winning 4-1. He helped the team win the 2013 Copa del Rey trophy and scored on many occasions during the tournament to carry the team.

Monaco announced that they had bought Falcao on 31 May 2013. Falcao made decision to move to Manchester United and was signed on a loan deal on 1 September 2014. He made 26 appearances and scored 4 goals that season.

Chelsea signed the Columbian striker later in July 2015, as Falcao looked to improve his form but only managed a brief spell at the English club. He played 10 games for Chelsea and scored only once.

Falcao returned to his parent club Monaco in July 2016.

On this day in 1991 - Zidane scored FIRST professional goal

Zidane scored his first professional goal 18 years ago. This nonchalant finish helped Cannes beat Nantes 2-1. The rest is history.

On this day in 1995 - Liverpool midfielder Keita was born

Keita began his professional career with Ligue 2 club FC Istres in 2013, and a year later he moved to Red Bull Salzburg, where he won the Austrian Football Bundesliga and Austrian Cup double in both of his seasons. He then moved to RB Leipzig in 2016, making the Bundesliga team of the season in his first year and the UEFA Europa League squad of the season in his second.

Keita made his senior international debut for Guinea in 2013. He has earned over 30 caps and was part of their squad at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

On 28 August 2017, a deal was struck for Keita to join Liverpool on 1 July 2018 after the English club triggered his £48 million release clause in addition to paying an undisclosed premium. Upon joining Liverpool he was handed the number 8 shirt by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
