Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (January 28th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, please post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!

On This Day in 2014 - Liverpool net FOUR past Everton in Merseyside Derby

Steven Gerrard led Liverpool to take derby honours with a stunning 4-0 win over Everton on Jan 28th, 2014.

The Reds captain scored an early opener before Daniel Sturridge stroke two quick-fire goals to put Liverpool 3-0 ahead of half-time, while Luis Suarez sealed the big victory with a brutal finish.

Liverpool were THAT close to Premier League title that season but only finished second in the end. But this year they might finally achieve their dream to lift the trophy.

On This Day in 2012 - Gerard Pique made his 100th La Liga appearance for Barcelona

Pique hit the century mark for the Catalans in La Liga on Jan 28th, 2012 - what proved to be one of his many more landmarks he made at Barcelona.

The Spain international came through the ranks at La Masia but left the club as a 17-year-old, joining Manchester United.

Pique rejoined Barcelona in the summer of 2008 for a fee of €5 million and immediately become a key member of Pep Guardiola's side.

And the rest is history.

On This Day in 1978 - Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon was born

What can I say? The 41-year-old Italian is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world - even of all time.

Gigi Buffon made his Serie A debut at Parma in 1995 as a 17-year-old and soon earned a reputation as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Italy.

In 2001, he joined Juventus - where he committed his most and best part of the football career to the Bianconeri. With Juventus, he won a record nine Serie A titles as well as four Coppa Italia titles, and five Supercoppa Italiana titles.

He joined PSG last summer after ending his 17-year spell at Juventus at the age of 40.

Buffon helped Italy to lift the World Cup trophy in 2006 when he became the runner-up for the Ballon d'Or that year.

On This Day in 2014 - Juan Mata made his Man Utd debut

Juan Mata, who joined Manchester United from Chelsea for £37m in January 2014, made his debut for the Red Devils on Jan 28th in a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City.

What's interesting, Ole Gunnar Solskajer, now in charge of United, was Cardiff’s boss and Mata has revealed what the Norwegian told him before the match then.

I remember his words in the tunnel before I headed out onto the pitch: “Welcome to this fantastic club, Juan, it is incredible, you’ll see. Enjoy it as much as you can and good luck.” Five years later, we’re both still here," wrote the midfielder in his blog.

On This Day in 2004 - Arsenal signed Jose Antonio Reyes

Reyes joined Arsenal after a string of good performances for La Liga outfit Sevilla over nearly four seasons, where he established a reputation of being a creative midfielder with an eye for goal.

The transfer cost Arsenal somewhere in the region of £10.5 million.

However, the playmaker was unable to settle in England and in his two and a half seasons with the Gunners, he accumulated 110 appearances netting 23 times.

In the summer of 2006 amid strong interest from Real Madrid, the Spaniard openly craved a move back to his homeland, even refusing to play in a Champions League qualifying game to avoid being cup-tied for the competition. Much to the displeasure of both the Arsenal fans as well as manager he was eventually able to force through a loan move to the Spanish capital.
